Default drilling holes in hardtop for kayak rack, bueno or no bueno?

So, I gotta figure out a way to transport a kayak or two before whitewater season. I've explored some rack options and just can not afford the route that I'd truly like to go (gobi rack), I need to explore other methods of transport. What say you guys about drilling holes for thule or yakima mounts? Will my hardtop be able to hold up to having the gear and rack on top especially under various driving conditions?

I've got the Thule 300 feet and two 58" load bars. Easy to remove/install, inexpensive, and no drilling required.

A few pics here - and Here!

I know alot of JK'ers have drilled the thule/yakima gutters direct to the hard top with great results. I like the option of not being permanant.

X2 on this. I would not want to drill the hardtop.

Forgot to mention that mine is a 2 door. I will be transporting 9-10 foot long kayaks. That might narrow it down a smidge

Mango,

I don't see a problem with just hauling the kayaks around on it. Anything heavier would make me cautious hauling around on it though. Be sure to seal the holes you drill with silicone and some good quality washers. Other than that, I think it will work fine for what you plan on using it for.

Good luck, and let me know if you have any other questions.

With a 2 door you're best option would be drilling the gutter into the top. As XT mentioned, definitely lay a liberal bead silicone around those holes to prevent any leakage. There are a few threads on here with write-ups.

Good luck and post up pictures!

Does anyone know which yakima/thule mounting system I would need to get this job done? I wanna swing by rack attack this weekend but maybe get a couple prices online first. I was qouted $706 for rack attack to drill the holes and mount the crossbars w/ a lifetime leakage warranty. That's not including the kayak carrier (s)... total being somewhere around a grand when all is said and done. At that price, gobi isn't much of a difference.
