is it worth replacing my Dana 30 with a Dana 44?
You're probably going to get an overwhelming amount of "yes" to this, but I'm curious how you use your Jeep. I have the same set up you do and I'm fine with it because I spend most of my time on trails or overland type stuff. I'm not big on mud bogs or rock crawling.... so a Dana 30 should be fine for that. If you're more extreme with your JK, then it may be wort looking for a good D44 or investing in a ProRock
Just remember your gears and locker won't transfer over - they're specific to the D30. You would need to factor that cost in as well. Depending on how much/hard you actually wheel it might be more cost effective to strengthen your D30 with trusses and c gussets, chromoly shafts, etc.
you have to look at the long term cost VS the short term cost.
Any money you put in the D30 is gone becouse none of the parts transfer over...but if you do not have the $$ to put into a D44 then it can be a stop gap measure until you do. (or until you break/bend the D30 and have no choice)
The big issue is finding a D44. They go like hot cakes when you can find them. That is why most people just go to a ProRock or TeraFlex D44. This however can get very pricey once you buy the Axel, Shaft, Gears, Locker and install cost. (4-5K easy)
Good luck....
One other idea is sell the Jeep you have and buy a Rubi.

Great post... what are your goals with your JK?
35/37's down the road?
Looks like he is running 35s now, Dyna I am curious on your take on this as I have 5.13s and a True Trac waiting for a gear install on my Dana 30. I plan on doing mild/moderate wheeling. Why is the added 5grand worth it for a d44 if your not planning on being an extreme wheeler? with a light foot, good path selection and smart wheeling can the d30 handle the 35s? I would love like most people to put a dana 44 in my rig, however I cannot wheel my DD hard at this time, and still have 4 years of payments on her LOL
I can pick up a Dana 44 with 4.10 and factory locker for $1800 and another $300 in labor for the switch. I off-road about 3 weekends a month and see a lot of rocks. Hardly ever over 10-15mph.
