Default Buying Winch covers...worth it or make your own?

Hello

I'm checking out winch covers for my new Warn winch and I'm seeing mixed feedback, a lot of people seem to like ones that are out there but many say that they only fit 80% at best...

My jeep isn't a traditional daily driver, 95% of the time or more it's garaged

I might drive it each day but just to run an errand or two and the occasional hop to go visit a friend and work on something there...

My point being that it seems that the main purpose of the winch cover is to protect the line, which in my case is synthetic

Other than going out in the winter during heavy snow, do most of you guys use winch covers?

Are they typically the one size fits most like the Warn covers?

Matthew

I have never used a cover on my jk winch. On my last jeep I did but it would hold moisture on the winch and it turned into a pile of rust.

This time I have a nicer and waterproof winch with synthetic line. It's been on my daily driver for almost 5 years and I haven't seen any issues with rust or line rot.

So... No cover

What kind of Warn did you end up going with? I have an ENGO 10000s and bought their neoprene cover for $20 to protect my line; I don't know whether it would fit yours or not but if it isn't a DD and sits in the garage alot I probably wouldn't worry about it. There are many people who say they run their synthetic line without covers and are fine a couple years later but it is cheap insurance vs. spending a couple hundred $ down the road for trying to save a couple bucks now.

I run the warn XD9000i and u took the cover off and after 3 months of no cover parts were seized. U had to take it apart and rebuild. The nice guys over at earth customer service walked me they the process and told me to always keep it covered and use it all last once every 90 days

There are covers just for the drum that will protect the synthetic rope.

I find that all of the neoprene covers fade and look horrible.

I ordered a neoprene cover for mine when I bought it to protect the rope mainly. Hated the way it looked so I immediately took it off and sold it. Came up with another solution..

I use a cover, but do take sure to take it off periodically. And as mentioned, make sure you use it every so often, don't just let it sit without use..

I know a cover is ugly but I have one for two reasons -- for out of sight and UV protection.

I have had my Warn 9.5ti uncovered in Michigan weather for 6 years. It still works and looks almost new. I am not a fan of covers because the moisture (from overnight dew and such) still gets in there, but takes much longer to dry. I run with a steel cable though.

Default WD-40 on Winches

Hey guys! I have never had a winch, but will be in the market soon. My winch recovery tool has been my Hi-Lift and has worked when I needed it. I have been reading the psots about covers and thought about suggesting WD-40. I'm sure you have seen the millions of uses for WD-40 (which stands for Water Displacement). So, my question is has anyone used WD-40 on their winch as a water/moisture protectant and if so, how well does it work and is there side effects of the use?

Thanks for the info!
