Default vasiline on winches?

I was told by a buddy you can put vaseline on your winch cable to stop it from rusting . What are your thoughts on this rust prevention method

Me thinks he just wants to see if you will do it....That would be a dirt magnet. I think WD40 is a water dispersant or some such thing. So, maybe a weekly or by weekly spraying of WD40 would be easier.

I was always told to not lube the cable. It causes more dirt and grime to be attracted, which is worse for it.

TFL-50 <--- click

TFL 50 Dry Lube
has the highest concentration of non-stick coatings available. It covers any surface and makes it as slippery as ice on ice. Unlike petroleum based lubes, it is clean, non-staining and anti-corrosive. Frankly it is unfair to call it just a lubricant. TFL 50 Dry passes military specifications MIL-L-60326(mu)Type I
