Just wondering which style of tire carrier everyone prefers. I know a lot of the Swing aways offer more accessories (Jerry cans, etc.) and room for bigger (37") tires, but assuming all things equal, would you rather use a swing away or a tail gate mounted tire carrier?

 

A swing away will provide more protection in the case of bumping into any obstacle with your spare tire/carrier itself.
If you were to hit something with a linked carrier you run the risk of damaging your tailgate. I was in the same dilemma when choosing a rear bumper/carrier and I opted for the LOD 3rd gen with carrier. It is offered either in a swing away fashion or linked to the tailgate.

Just wanted to bump this as I'm considering both options as well. I want the options of a swing away but I open the gate like 4 times a day for my dog n I think it would be annoying.

 

I have the Teraflex hinge myself, and in very happy with it. Nice and strong, and opens just like factory.

 

I second the OR FAB. It's a great carrier and I have zero complaints! Well worth the money and installation

 

I much preferr a swing out. I went with the AEV carrier.
