I got 5.13's for xmas for my 2010 wrangler unlimited mountain edition, 3.73's in the d30 up front so I shouldn't need a new axel housing, and its a d44 in the back. Called Boston Jeepz today in Newton, Ma and they said they wouldn't install them in my jeep, that it wouldn't be good for my jeep and I should get new teraflex axels, and that I wouldnt notice any difference unless I supercharged the jeep too? This isnt something I have ever heard. Im not expecting to feel like I am on a rocket ship with the new gears but everyone said the driveabiliy post re-gear is day and night, I did my research before I got the 5.13's...even talked to Northridge. Is this just a case of someone not knowing what they were talking about or what? Any advice would be much appreciated, and any other shop suggestions in the greater boston area would be great.

 

I would call around for a different shop

 

5.13 is a good bit of gear and assuming that you'll be going with a tire size to match it (35's for the auto, maybe squeeze 37's with the manual) maybe the shop just wants to make sure you aren't going to set yourself up for failure.

It's not their place to say it won't work or that you'll *need* new axles. Just be aware of what you're doing with that gear and don't outdrive the truck.

 

You are right. Keep looking for a better shop. Sounds like they just wanted to sell you some axles. If they are going to be that way, you don't want them in your axles anyway. Good luck

 

Going from 3.21 to 4.88. Was day and night to me personally. Sounds like the guy was trying to sell you a bunch of shit. You'll notice a lot of difference I think but depending on tire size and most people I have talked to a Dana 30 you max size is a 35" tire. Your going to some day want to replace your axle to a Dana 44 front in which case I would look at pro rock. If you talked with northridge I would trust what they say. They always know their stuff

yea I think I will go to this shop for services since its right near my apt and I have read amazing feedback for jeep servicing but they said they have another charge rate for aftermarket stuff (150 an hour) seemed a little steep and it generally just seems like they arent comfortable with that sort of thing

I have 37's so you can definately run a d30 and 37s there are a million different threads on people running a d40, if you run them hard eventually they are going to break on you buy I dont run mine hard, and I am going to end up doing sleeves and gussets eventually.

 

Do more searching- the sleeves only provide strength on one plane whereas the truss will do more for you.

Bottom line is what you've finally reached- you got a bad shop.

Some people expect re-gearing to be 'instant hemi power', instead of just bringing the rpm's back up to a more usable range. As long you have the right expectations, those 5.13's will be great.

If you open the faq's, find the rpm charts, and plug some numbers in, you will find that turning your OD Off will bring your freeway rpm's up to about the same range as 5.38's. So you should easily be able to get a fairly good approximation of the difference. (divide the chart rpm by .69 to get OD Off)

 

Sounds like the shop is capable of swapping axles but not setting up gears. Run away Forest. Run like the wind.
