Aftermarket 42RLE with RIPP SC
So my '08 42RLE with 72k just gave out and looking at options for a replacement. I have a RIPP SC, and think I put a cooler on to manage the heat a little too late, so while driving down the highway this weekend, had 3rd and 4th give out, now vehicle is in limp mode (reverse and 2nd only work). Looking at options, and would be great to hear from the forum on suggested solutions.
1) Rebuild the trans myself, using Level 10 pack, solenoid, converter ~ $1100 plus specialized tools (spring compressor, etc)
2) Buy a used or OEM replacement and get the tune refined (RIPP suggestion) ~ around $1k
3) Buy a Smartparts replacement ~ $1700 includes shipping and new converter
4) Buy an ATS replacement ~ $2700 includes shipping a new converter
5) Buy a Level 10 complete 42RLE ~$ 3,300
6) Have a local shop rebuild my trans ~$?
I grew up working on cars and airplanes, rebuilt engines, but never a trans, so thinking I might be able to pull this one off, but would rather have a complete swap out. If you have experience on one of the above options, it would be great to get feedback on your experience. Also, any suggestions on upgrades to the trans with the additional power of the SC?
Thanks,
-Dan

Sorry to hear. All great options and you've done your homework. As for install? I dont think its something you want to screw up. Great if you can do it yourself, but be certain your doing it all properly. Otherwise you dont save yourself much in the end
