Does anyone know how this front bumper mod was done? I really like it and would like more details on it.

 

Looks DIY to me. You could trim and add VDP or RC caps.

 

Yes, I did this to my previous jeep. You must remove bumper, and cut through the plastic and metal back plating of bumper. Once you cut it that close, it will require the use of self tapping screws... You will understand better once you cut it. He is using an aftermarket stubby end cap - not sure what brand. The mod is super easy. Requires a jig saw or saws aw with a metal cutting blade. The blades are not long enough to do one straight thru cut, so you will have to flip the bumper/adjust angle a few times. Entire process to include taking off bumper and reinstall - 90 min....

 

To cut the plastic bumper I would just use a hack saw. Anything that spins fast will melt the plastic. I used a grinder and a cut off wheel to cut the metal portion. There is another thread on the stubby stock bumper that reuses the plastic ends that get cutoff. I thing it looks much cleaner than whats in that pic above. I completely did away with the plastic and simply stubbied the metam bumper underneath. I really like how it turned out. Here are a couple before and afters of mine.
I plan on throwing some LED's in the holes in front to finish off the look.

At first I thought he use the aftermarket in caps however it looks like he did what I've seen others do with melting some flat black plastic to seal it off on the end caps. Then it looks like the bumper metal is wrapped around the backside towards the front.

 

One more thing, I assume there's a winch thread that matches that one around here somewhere?

Yes, there are multiple threads with regard to the stubby bumper mod - there are a couple variations on the same theme though. One by Arkonius and one by Tinman - (both write ups are good - (likely over-simplified difference(s): one keeps the nutserts for the bumper, one doesn't) check out the JK Write ups, Member write ups section(s).
