Default Stock 16's with spacers.... Tire help

So i currently have 265/75/16 terra graps on the stock oem 16 inch steelies. But now since purchasing spacers, i decide to get a bigger tire since i now can fit them correctly.

I went to a local tire place and they said for the oem steel wheels being 16x7 ( i thought they were 16x7.5 or 8 ) that the 265 that i have would be the biggest i can go for that wide of rim. He said any bigger and i would be riding on the center of the tire more. While he said it was "ok", it would just ride bad and wear the tires maybe sooner....

Any thoughts on this?

I have seen a ton of people here run all the way up to 35's on these oem 16's.

what gives?

I'm running 285x75x16 on stock steel wheels Goodyear Wrangler dura tracs . No wheel spacers and a Tera Flex 2 1/2" leveling kit with no issues so far
