Default Third Brake Light mod?

I want to mod my third brake light like this guy did on the picture. I spent five to ten minutes trying to figure out how to take the light apart without breaking it. I haven't had much time since. Is this possible on a JK?

I don't have access to our Jeep at the moment but a cursory search shows that the unit is sealed and not meant to be opened. So I would say you have two options.

Option A would be to mask the exterior of the light off and use a spray on product like Nightshades. You could maybe even Plastidip the lens depending on the design you're going for and how much coverage you want.

Option B would be to bake the unit and see if you could pop it apart. In my opinion it would not be worth the effort but do some Google searches on "baking headlights".

Those covers are on ebay all day long. It screws over top of the stock one.

That's what I figured. I took off the whole mount and it didn't look like it came apart but I thought maybe someone else was able to figure it out. I don't want to break the hardware so I'll leave it alone for now.

It looks like we can't do it on the stock JK brake light. I think the Jeep in that picture is a TJ.. not sure though. Looks like if you want to do it, you'll have to find an aftermarket third brake light that comes apart fairly easy.

Can you remove the light without taking off the spare tire? I'm thinking about tinting mine, but I don't have he motivation to take off the whole tire carrier or to mask off the whole back of my Jeep to do it.

I believe you can but I don't remember if I took mine all the way off. I'm sure it would be easier to take off the spare. I might try tomorrow. I'll let you know if I do!
