Default Can't stop my death wobble

Before I start, I want to thank Panman for his write-ups and videos on the subject. They helped me a great deal.

Despite Panman's contributions, I still haven't solved my death wobble issues. I've been at it for a while, but I can't figure this out!

I recently replaced my 2007 JKU Sahara (which my son destroyed in an accident), with a 2008 JKU Rubicon. I installed a 3.5" Rubicon Express lift, which includes an adjustable trackbar, so that I could fit the 35" tires I was able to salvage from my old JKU. Everything seemed to be fine, but then I started experiencing some wobbles. So, I started trying to diagnose and solve the issue.

Here's what I've done so far to try to resolve the issue
  • loosened, settled and retightened all of my control arms.
  • Replaced all four tie rod ends (with Moog ends), as they all displayed vertical movement while running the checklist
  • Replaced the trackbar bolts with 9/16" bolts with a shoulder, torqued them to 125ft/lbs
  • Checked my tire pressure. Both sides are at 32psi

After replacing all the tie rod ends, I went back through the checklist and I still had a clunk. It's most noticeable at the pitman arm end of the drag link, and seems to be coming from the steering box.

I'm trying to get it in for a front end alignment tomorrow, but based on my measurements, the axle is centered within a 1/4" and the steering wheel is centered, but I think my tires might be toed in a little too much. When I installed the lift, I didn't install the cam bolts as my drive shafts were nicely aligned, but I think I may need to install them to allow the castor to be adjusted properly.

Will an alignment solve my problem, or am I looking at a new steering box?

ThanX!

How are the control arm bushings? Also post up the alignment numbers if you can when its done, see how the caster looks, caster is pretty important, id get control arms to get it dialed in or use the cam bolts...

Did you have the tires balanced and rotated?

Check your ball joints. I believe Panman has a video on youtube on how to check them.

With mine up on jack stands in drive all 4 wheels spinning in 1st gear I could easily find the culprit. Had one tire not seated evenly on the bead nice and true on a front wheel/tire assy. Dismounted anyhow to re balance with lead instead of equal on all 5 anyhow. Glassy smooth no death wobble any more at any speed ... With 37's taboot!

I had it. Twice.
I know that a steering stabilizer does not fix it.
But if it masks it and I get no symptoms then that's good enough for me.
4wheelparts sold me a pressurized Bilstein stabilizer and I had no more issues.
Here in upstate NY they use heavy salt and so after 2 years I had to replace it. The salt ruining my stabilizer made the 2nd occurrence come on. The new Bilstein had it stop.
I had done all the other measures too.
Everyone says it will only cover it up, yet if it is always covered up than it is good enough for me

Terrible advice. Fix the underlying problem or face bigger problem or injury down the road.

My death wobble was fixed completely with the replacement of the tie rod end on the drag link at the pitman arm. I used the Synergy tie rod ends as replacements. You said you had replaced that tie rod end and that there was a clunk in that same location. I could only feel a sharp click and slight movement in that tie rod end before the fix. Not a clunk at all. And my death wobble had gotten very frequent. Did you grab that tie rod end in your hand as someone turned the steering wheel back and forth? I could feel the problem in my hand. Just checking because as soon s I felt it I knew that was the problem spot. It was not coming from the steering box. Good luck to you.
