Default D-Ring mount to Factory rear bumper?

I have some D-ring mounts that I picked up cheap. The mounting plates are 3 1/2" x 3 1/2".
I'm curious to know if anyone has mounted these to the factory bumpers?
I did a search and could not find any, I'm guessing it's because the factory bumper isn't strong enough to support these mounts?

Hey Radguy,

I haven't seen it done before and I can't vouch for how strong the mount will be or how good it will look, but I'm sure you could bolt them on there somehow. The "bumper" is actually just a plastic cover. The actual metal is hidden underneath. You'd definately need to hit that metal and not the plastic of course.

Here's an image and quote from a different thread that should give you a little more of a look at what you'd be dealing with.

Hopefully this helps, the other option you could do is put a slide in shackle in your hitch receiver (if you've got one). Something like this:

Not sure if you have seen the video that is circulating around about the people who where killed by flying metal during a recovery attempt.....think long and hard about product quality as well as where and how to mount your recovery points!

Hence why I posted this topic

Trying to find out what has worked for others.

I have a receiver, however I would just like more permanent mounts.

I could have swore that I saw another member, a few weeks ago, with the similar mounts that I purchased on her stock rear bumper. For the life of me I can't seem to locate that member or the pictures.

The hook that came stock on my Jeep worked great. Dont know how much they cost from the dealer. You might try looking in the classifieds on this sight for one if your Jeep didnt come with one.

oh and the factory bumper is like 3lbs of plastic. For what it is its pretty strong but mounting anything to it would be a hazard.

I say don't do it unless you want to meet your keeper a little faster. Plastic holding metal is not good in anyone's book. Get a new bumper or if you are an expert fabricator you can find a way to mount to the bumper bracket.

I posted this asking how or if others have done it.
Obviously the bumper is not strong enough it's self. That's why I have the D-ring mounts. Otherwise I'd just hook my strap to the bumper!

So I guess I should have worded my question better:
Has anyone been able to attach D-ring mounts to the stock bumper, so you can actually use the D-ring mounts in a safe manner?
I mean why in the world would you try and attach D-ring mounts to plastic???
SERIOUSLY???

My buddy did the d rings through frame holes in the rear, it seemed fine for the few years he had his JK. There isn't much of a bumper to speak of in the rear, so you're probably better off buying an aftermarket bumper with d ring mounts to protect the rear of the tub and your spare. But if you don't want to do that, you can put them in those frame holes and get away with it.

I'm planning to go with the EVO bolt-on D ring mounts that fit into the frame rails, then cover the frame with their rear bumper fascia and do away with the rear bumper altogether.
