Default Noob Winch Question: Synth Rope Cover

I picked up a Smittybilt X20 Gen2 Comp winch at the Bantam Festival this weekend. I have never owned a winch before, including anything with synthetic line.

The last 10 or so feet of the rope, there is a cover over the rope. What is the purpose?

Also, the last three feet, there is a canvas cover that is attached with velcro over the top and the aforementioned cover. What is the purpose?

The heavy canvas one seems like it would be too heavy to spool onto the winch drum. Do I leave it on and spool it on the drum or leave it off? I guess that depends on the purpose.

I appreciate any answers.

Im pretty sure its so if you are winching up and theres a rock or something that will hit the synthetic rope you will put that sleeve on top of the rock. Doing so the line can run through the sleeve without having to worry about the line fraying. But i would get something else to kind of help with that on top of that.

Edit: I may be wrong im trying to google it now.

I'd advise against nood winching.

Yes it's a Chafe guard, though I wouldn't trust it over rocks.

Noted. I can't type.

Do I leave it on and spool it onto the drum?

First ten feet of line has a cover to protect it from the drum heat and it helps when spooling the line to the drum. The Velcro cover is to protect the last few feet of line from the sun, just go slow when you spool the last few feet of line so it will go through the fairlead.. Guide the line with the cover back and forth so it covers most of the line from the sun.
Good luck,
Augi

How much did you get the winch for? I heard people were getting killer deals on Sunday.

Like any show, the best deals are on the last day. Vendors don't want to take the stuff back with them. Of course, you risk not the dealer selling it to someone else before you get back to them.

The winch retails for $549. Quadratec was offering be a forum discount at $519, but they had none in stock until July. Same with 4 Wheel Parts. All I will say is that Jeeper's Den gave it to me for even less than that! Compared to QT and 4WP, they are a small dealer. I dealt with the owner, Ricky, direct, rather than a sales person that has rules he has to stick with.

Ricky also gave me a great deal on a receiver hitch as well.
