Bought a used hard top. It did not come with the retainer clips tht have the nut in them for mounting the rear piece.

Are these a necessity, or could I get by using the t40 screws with a 8mx1.25 nut and a washer on the underside?

Anyone done sometging similar and had success?

I wouldn't think that they are necessary, but I would put a large washer around the bolt and underside. seen a lot of people torque them to tight, and crack the top...
