Hey everybody, i have a 2010 jk that just hit 60,000 miles. At 30,000 miles i did diff fluid, transfer case and tranny fluid. I just drained and filled the diffs at 30,000. Question, do i HAVE to or should i take the covers off this change? If i do take them off i know to clean them with brake cleaner etc etc. If there is just fuzzy shavings on magnet should they be good to go? Obviouslly if there is chunks of metal then i have a problem..thanks!!

 

I wouldn't worry about removing the covers. A simple drain and fill and a good cleaning of the magnetic plug is just fine.

 

Agreed! Oddly enough did mine yesterday as part of regular maint and "get ready for winter" along with T-case and oil.

Both my diff covers have no leaks or weeps (knocking on wood) both magnets just fuzzy no chunks when I have close inspection.

Ready for old man winter now I guess LOL

 

To start just pull the plugs when doing the diff service. If they aren't "fuzzy" looking with a bunch of metal shavings no need to pull covers. There will be some shavings but as long as it's minimal it's not a problem.

 

I just did mine yesterday. Pulled the plugs only, not the covers. No leaks or indication to do so otherwise. Filled fresh with the recommended 80w90 API GL-5 oil and a can of LSD friction modifier in the rear, and called it a day!

Have to do the settings over to let me know when i get a message...Anyway i called a guy from west coast differentials, i told him i had 60,000 grand on it and said i dont need to take them off with this change but i can at 90,000. thanks for the feedback!!!!

 

With 60,000 grand, that's 60,000,000 miles, I would definitely change my diff fluid.

 

I'm getting ready to do mine soon. Wal Mart Supertech full synthetic 75w140 in the rear, and 75w90 in the front. I do mine about every 30k. I have the dealer do it if it is seeping or leaking around the cover. I've done that once, and it was covered under the lifetime powertrain warranty. They sealed them up right because there's no more seepage.
