Ive read multiple threads on multiple forums about 285s fitting without spacers on stock wheels. Some folks say they fit and some say they needed spacers. What are people's experiences?

Do the people that need spacers not have perfectly centered axles or is it dependent on the tire mfg?

 

I have 285/70/17 Terra Graps and at full lock the lugs rub the sway bar. Doesn't really hurt anything and I just always keep in mind when I go full lock to just relax the steering wheel just a bit when I make a u-turn or a sharp corner. Usually you're not going more then 1 - 2 mph when at full lock so it's not like it's going to tear anything up.

 

Thanks for the input RoysRig. I'm trying to decide between running my 35" MTRs and buying 2.5" springs during the Black Friday sales (to replace the 3"/3.5" springs in my garage) or buy 1.5" springs and drop down to 285/75R17s on stock wheels.

I'm just loving the stock ride for now so trying to minimize the height & weight increase this time around and the stock wheels have grown on me.

 

I have 285/75-17 Toyo at2 and previously i had 285/70-17 toyo at2 and no way I would run them off road. the 285/75 are about the size of many 35's. I have about 2" lift and ran them with 1.5" spidertrax spacers until I got some rims with 5.2" backspacing.

I did drive home from the tire shop without the spacers as they would not mount them with spacers on the wrangler. rub on front sway bar when turning and very close to the rear control arms. my axles are centered.

 

I had 285/70/17 on an aftermarket wheel(4.75 backspace) and before I added a lift I would rub on the air dam (That's gone now too) when backing out of my driveway and turning sharp.
It was more an annoyance than anything else.
You can adjust the steering stops to limit your turning.

 

 

The rubbing when turning close to full lock isn't a big concern and I'll use whatever coil spring / bumpstop combo is necessary but the concern is the stuff that it might not clear otherwise. If it's going to constantly rub a swaybar then I'd go a different route.

I have 285/70-17 BFG AT's on stock wheels and they don't rub anywhere.

 

I just put some winter tires on. Destination AT in a 285/70/17 and no rubbing anywhere. Even disconnected.
