Default Question about oversize tire fit on factory spare mount

I just bought some new shoes for the JKU, upgrading from 295-70 17 to Cooper Discover STT 315-70 17, and now the spare won't fit on my factory spare tire mount.

A new spare tire carrier is in the future, but after dropping the cash for 5 tires and Christmas around the corner, now is not the right time. My plan is to survive with the factory mount until spring.

I bought some 3/4" nylon washers on the studs last night, but it still doesn't pull the tire tight without hitting the bumper. I can't put anymore spacers on the studs because there's no more threads available.

All that being said, for Sahara owners that have removed the silver inlay, how much space does that buy? How thick is this?

For any non-Sahara owners, do you have any problems running a 315-70 tire on the factory mount? I had read guys running 35's with no problem, so I didn't expect this problem.

1.5" wheel spacer worked for me. I have a 315/70/17 Duratrac on the stock carrier for almost 2 years now, no problems. Others have had problems, YMMV. Just watch the welds on the door and make sure they are not cracking. The best bang for your buck, in my opinion, is the Teraflex hinge.

hopefully I will be able to let you know tonight. I am waiting for ups to deliver my rims and will know how a 35x12.5-17 tire fits on a stock set up. I do have a teraflex hinge tho to support the extra weight. If I have to I am going to cut the plastic stock bumper in the area beneath the tire.

You can use this to raise the tire straight up 1.5" : | TeraFlex Suspensions
Or this one that will get you 1.75" up and 2.75" out: | TeraFlex Suspensions

The month that I ran my 35 before getting the teraflex hinge I ran a spacer that moved it out and up an inch or so. Worked for a temporary fix. PM me if u need it. It's sitting in my garage in the jeep parts pile.

I have bfgoodrich at's 315-70 r17 on a wheel that gains 1.5" of backspacing and it touches the bumper, but just enough that I feel the bumper is adding support and taking weight off the hinges. Been on 5 pretty rugged off road trips putting vibrations and bumps to the test and no cracking or bending yet. And the stock third brake light still shows. I too will be going teraflex when funds allow, though.

I used a spacer on my 35" tires for over a year with no problems. I believe it was a warrior products, but others that are similar will work as well. It raises the tire about an inch and out about an inch. Never had any problems with weight on the tailgate. My Jeep was a 2010.

You could just leave the spare in the garage unless you're going off road or on a long trip until you can afford a new carrier. If you don't need storage space, you could always just strap it in the back. I fit 3 315/70r/17s in the back of my 2 door w/ 1 on the tire carrier when I first got my lift + tires. I don't have an actual mailing address (I live in the barracks) so I had to send them to a buddy's house and drive them to the auto hobby shop. That was a little sketchy though.

Well my Toyo 35/12.5-17's are a little too big. They are close but I'm going to need to cut the plastic or get the adapter to raise it up a little.

I'm getting a spacer from a fellow forum member, so I'll run this for a few months until I get some extra money for a actual tire carrier.
