Default Opinions on rock lights

I am looking into installing some rock lights and wanted to get some input.

Lights
Here are some of the options I have looked at:

Lux Lights (4pk)

Inspired Engineering Rock Lights (4pk)

xkglow rock lights

Opinions or thoughts on these options?

Wiring
Also, looking into wiring them to my sPod and splicing power into the dome light with a diode. I've read that the dome light wire can be found in the bundle of wires under the carpet on the passenger side at the back of the rear door and to use the yellow with white tracer wire. However, I have two (2) wires that are yellow with white tracer. How do I know which one to use?

Diode
From another forum there is a wiring diagram that uses a very simple diode from radio shack (diode 1n4001). See here: 1n4001 diode If I were to get this diode, could I simply crimp some connectors to it and then use an in line connector (snap on type) to tap onto the dome light wire.

If I were to get this type of diode Huskey Diode would I simply cut the dome light wire and crimp a female connector on either end. Connect the one end going to the dome light to the OUT end and the power feed onto one of the IN ends. Then have a wire from the rock lights with a female connector go to the other IN end of the diode?

Check out on YouTube think its john golden. He has a video diy rock lights. Uses a set of cheap fog lamps from Wal-Mart. That's what I did and ran it in loom and plugged it into my spod. I mounted my fronts like him then for the rears I mounted them inside the shock pocket. They work good. Cheap also. If broke oh well.

I have the LUX lights on my JK powered by an sPod and I absolutely love them. Crazy bright and easy install. Not too sure about which wires to tap into for the dome, but a detailed schematic should point you in the right direction. Good luck!

Kids would love the VisionX kit that will strobe and such.

The Lux lights seem to be made pretty tough.

Any other thoughts or opinions on lights and the wiring info I mentioned?

I have xkglow. The price is right but I didn't trust the wiring so I ran my own. Came in handy on a few night runs in moab.

$19 for 12 of these: http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Bump...ds=rock+lights

It's what many people in my local Jeep clubs use. They're cheap, small/inconspicuous, and bright as hell, especially for their size. Averaging a little over $1.50/each, if one breaks or burns out, no big deal. One order comes with enough lights to do all 4 wheel wells 3 times over. Snip the wires, tap in the new ones and you're back off to the races. They're such low draw that you could probably just tap them into your OEM driving/marker lights if you didn't feel like wiring them to a toggle switch.

I purchased 7" LED strips with adhesive backing and wired them into existing lights. Super easy,, 1 strip up front, 1 in the back. I got mine from DDM Tuning.

The rock lights options you point to are well made. I think you can't go wrong with any of them.

My view on this is different. Rock lights are exposed under the Jeep. They get covered with dirt or mud. Wiping them clean scratches the plastic lenses. I'd therefore prefer cheap LED strips/clusters, zip-tied in place, so they can be easily replaced.
Cheap isn't necessarily low quality. They're simply made in much larger quantities than dedicated rock lights.

e.g.: Oznium Premium Rectangle LED Module.
At $ 2.49 each, they would do the same job that $50 or $100 lights would do.

The trick is the number and placement of the lights, so they illuminate the whole area under the Jeep, as evenly as possible, as well as in front of & behind each wheel.
You don't need a ton of light, just enough to see. You don't want a spotter (or yourself) to be blinded when looking away from the lighted area.

Also notice the light color. Cool white (6000K+, bluish) is typically somewhat brighter, warm white (4000~4500K, yellowish) is more pleasant. Around 5000~5500K, it's neutral daylight.

Wiring diagram for rock lights on another thread -- Link (Post 459) -- There's also a very good thread on wiring rear LED lights.
The wiring diagrams can be applied to rock lights. The advantage of these circuits is the use of relays instead of diodes -- Link (Post 22) --
