Default 3.5in lift or bigger?

I have a 2014 freedom edition JKU and Im wanting to do 40 inc tires. Im trying to decide to go 3.5 in or bigger on suspension. i will have flat fender on the front and none in the rear and 5.38 gears front and rear. I want some flex still. Any input?

You can definitely run 40s on a 3.5 - 4" suspension system but you're going to need all 8 control arms or long arms to move the axles around slightly to maximize your travel. You'll also need to become good friends with the sawzall or a cutoff wheel to open up any areas in the fender wells for clearance. It isn't bad and can definitely be done. It will just take a little fine tuning and patience to maximize it's potential.

thanks for the input. this is my first wrangler so really relying on everyones input. i really like the look of the 40s on the smaller lifts. i want to keep a low center of gravity of crawling. once i get it fine tuned will it be able to have a good bit of flex?

Hey Jeff, I am far from an expert on this but I have read in many different places about drive shafts being an issue with any lift over 2.5". If you haven't looked at Dirtman's sticky in the tech forum you may want to. He's really a good source for info. Good luck and post some pics.

Also, 40s on that d30 is an issue also.... Before you do anything check with some of the big dogs on this forum.... Will save you money and headaches down the line.

40's on aD30??? Buy a new front axle. If your doing any off trading, swap out the rear 44 as well. To run 40's, there's more than swapping gears and doing the lift.

Lift doesn't necessarily relate directly to "flex" its more related to up/down travel, but all that can be adjusted to a degree. if your worried about cog and not your axles disintegrating into a cloud of dust your doing it backwards.

Price wise to run 40s safelt your pretty realistically looking at over 10 grand. More than likely if your not doing the work it could end up 25-40k plus very easily.

Like others have stated - going to 40’s will be a massive investment. If this is your first jeep, and your new to offroad (my assumption), I would highly recommend going to 35’s first. You can get by with your stock axles, and you'll be able to go plenty of places on 35’s - don't be fooled into thinking you need to go big to enjoy your jeep.

Are you prepared to drop another 20k? Or are you comfortable building some junkyard 60’s.

There are two threads at the top of this modified area with some good info in them (it may or may not be new or useful information to you, but worth looking through anyway). And if you search for any post by Planman, you will find a good link in his sig. It is a how-to low cog on 37's, but it may be a decent start on some of the issues to look for with 40's. (last I saw he had gone to 40's, maybe larger, but I don't know if he has a build thread for that?)

Dryantrac ProRocks seem to be the name to beat. But there are many others out there to research. Or read through a few dozen of the junkyard build threads and see what you think.
