Default Mile Marker Sec8 Scout ES, Smittbilt Gen2 x20 10 Comp, Superwinch Tiger Shark 9500 SR

Hello All,

Does anyone know if the brake on the Mile Mark Sec8 Scout ES is external to the drum? I know from my research that it is on both the Gen2 X20 10 Comp and Tiger Shark 9500 SR - a good idea for a synthetic line.

I am in the final stages of descending a winch for my JK Sport build.

One thing I don't like about the Sec8 Scout is the hawse fairlead having the bolt holes offset to the bottom - makes it not a bolt on for most all winch plates. Yes, there is drilling new holes or cutting the opening on the mount larger or buying a different hawse fairlead.

Thoughts from owners?

Warn owners need not reply Had one on my last JKU build and not wanting one for this build

Thank you,

Dale

I have the SEC8 Scout with synthetic. Sorry, can't help on the brake..I will say I haven't had any problems with heat. It does have a protective sleave covering the first layer.

You are right about the fairlead. I didn't even notice until several weeks after I installed it on my JCR bumper. First wheeling trip where I used the winch I notice there was steel protruding into the opening on the fairlead..not good. I picked up a smittybilt fairlead on ebay for $20..problem solved.

Thank you for the reply. I will call Mile Marker in the morning and see what they say

I currently have the Superwinch Tiger Shark 9500 on my front bumper, but it will be removed by tomorrow. I loved that winch and it never left me but as I got on hard and harder trails, it finally just gave up pulling a ZJ out yesterday. I'm not a hardcore buggy type wheeler by any means, but I've had that winch pull my JK up near vertical walls before. In my opinion, it's a great winch if you just need it from time to time and don't wheel a lot. I wheel just about twice a month now and decided to upgrade to the Warn (I know I know "need not reply"). I plan to use the warranty and get a new one but I'll just be selling it to recoop some of the loss from the Zeon.

I'm not a fan of spare tire covers and it was a hassle because I do a 5 tire rotation so...I cut it up for a cover. Simple rectangular shape with a slit on one end held on with two mini bungees. Its worked great for a couple years now.

I understand, thank you for the input. No worries about the Warn comment

One thing about that disappoints me about the Tiger Shark is the inability to move the solenoid to a different location.

Okay, just got off the phone with Mile Marker. The brake is inside the drum on the Tiger Shark Sec8 Scout which is not the best for a synthetic rope - so I will have to ponder that one. So the winch is not engineered specifically for synthetic rope. They just took the same winch they use for steel rope and put synthetic on it.

Also, they said they still have the same hawse fairlead with the bolt holes offset to the bottom making is incompatible with most winch plates/bumpers.

Hmm...have to think more about this

I really do like the approach that both Superwinch and Smittybilt used to make synthetic specific winches.

Well.... I wouldn't say that just yet. This is a friend of mine's build thread and he runs the Superwinch Tiger Shark as well. I think you might find this particular page interesting...
