Default Anyone running outboard rear coilovers on their jk?

Im trying to figure out which direction to go in for the rear suspension on my jk. It seems like from what ive read that the outboard coilover mounts offer more flex and better stability. Im going to be running the mopar 60s that measure 69.5 inches long so im good there but i cant find anywhere that sells the mounts that go into the tub. Please let me know if you have experience with this and where i can find the mounts. Thanks!

More flex depends on mounting. Stability yes depending on angles also. Even at 69.5 it may be a tight fit... Id say your frenching the frame at a bare minimum.

Mounts theres tons of options. You need to see what length coilovers and go from there. Chassis unlimited has an adjustable coilover mount also.

Agree with Maertz. My axle is 72" and I cut all the way into the frame. I'm also running a double triangulated rear, which keeps the axle centered. If you run a track bar, you will have axle shift and need more clearance.

Yup i had to cut my whole frame section out and believe dirt did also. Not sure how wide ringers is but he was damn near all the way thru also.

Ringer is running stock Rubi axles. He not only had to cut through the frame, but then used some 6" diameter schedule 40 pipe to create more room. I'll have him post a pic here.

A lot of the width in wider axles is not in the tube, but after the flanges (hubs, etc). So, you don't really gain much space over a stock axle.

Outboarding won't net anymore flex. That come from shock length. It will however make it far more stable.

What length shocks are you looking to run? This makes a big difference. I went with 14's on stock axles and had to cut completely through the frame and then pocket it more to help clear the springs. I am in a two door and still run the backseat. I got my mounts from Barnes 4x4, but Artec, TMR, and others make mounts to French in. I am running a double triangulated four link, so I have no lateral shift of the axle. If you plan on running a trackbar, it will be even worse. The end result is worth it, but it is a lot of work to get it there.

More gussets were added after this, but you get the idea.

Thanks guys for the reply. I was planning on running 14" rear coilovers because i want to try to keeo a lcg and 12" in the front. I will be most likely be running a track bar with either synergy or evo high clearance long arms.

Also how do you know where to mount the tower on the frame and how long of a tower you need?

It all depends on your build. Unless you buy a kit, it's up to you to figure it out.

I'm running 16" struts and mounted on top of the axle tube. I run with max uptravel as well. So, I needed insanely tall towers.

Ringer for example, is running 14s and his axle bracket is mounted in front of the tube, so he required a lot less tower height. He is stretched 4" rear, I'm a little over 7".

If you have a 4 door and no stretch, then that is just another iteration.

If you outboard, you'll have to cut a hole in the wheel well for the tower. No way around it.

Btw, it is way easier to go longer travel in the front than the rear (at least that was my experience).

I do have a 4 dr. I dont mind cutting into the frame and the tub. Ive cut off all the upper and lower control arm mounts without any problems so i think i can get the nerves to cut into the tub. I just have no idea where to place the tower. If i went with 16" coilovers is it going to offer much more flex than the 14"? Or am i going to bind up the driveshaft before the coil completely unloads?
