You should be able to tell by the weight between solid aluminum and solid steel.

What do the ends look like? Did they make the steel tie rod with the new ends?

If you have an aluminum tie rod, throw it away. Better yet, recycle it for a few bucks and buy a steel one. That's the last thing I would trust my loved ones lives to. Put a magnet up to it. If it sticks, it's steel.

There is no mistaking the aluminum one. Steel is solid and the moment you pick up the aluminum and it feels like it has the weight of a 12 ounce can of soda, you know then which is which.
