So I did a pretty steep hill comb the other day on a muddy, rocky hill, and the jeep kept getting it power cut to the wheels!?!?

It was in 4 low, in drive. And a couple time going up the hill the jeep would get the engine cut even though I had my foot in the skinny. It feels like the traction control kicks in. I thought all the traction stuff was disabled in the 4 low mode?

 

I noticed the same event on my last outing. 4-lo, steep slightly damp ground, about 3,000 rpm. It was like it was cutting out occasionally.
I'm not concerned, but certainly am going to pay attention to this next time and have my scanner app recording everything.

 

might be your brake lock diff kicking in man.

 

I had a thread around my hill climb. If u look up power line hill in indiana on u tube you will see what I'm taking about. I made it up 3/4 way and everything shut off. I think we came to a conclusion that it was fuel starvation.

 

Would it be possible that it's activating the jeeps tip sensor?

 

There is a jeep tip sensor ? What year jeeps ?

 

Fuel starvation isn't likely considering it's fuel injected unless you have other issues going on.

 

I'd like amend what I said here as I didn't think about the fuel pickup being at such an angle that it would starved, but I would still think that is unlikely.

 

Auto tranny? If so it's the torq converter. My 99 tj used to do that on very very steep inclines. I may be wrong, but it's just a thought.

 

It can kick in the traction control.

I did some test runs one day, on a loose, steep, slope. 2 high, 4 high, 4 low... At some point the traction control kicked in on each and literally stopped the Jeep from climbing the hill. 4 low did the best, but eventually it too ground to a halt.

Then I activated the rear air locker (aftermarket) and drove right up the hill, no problem...
