Default Wil a trimmed tailpipe cause exhaust smell in cab?

So a friend at work ( non jeeper ) warned me that tailpipes stick out close to past the body to prevent exhaust from seeping into the cab. Especially at little or no speed. Has anyone had this happen to them? I was considering trimming my tailpipe after catching on some rocks. I was on an obstacle but had to back up a bit to bump the jeep up it. When I backed up the tailpipe caught a rock and ripped off the hangers. Was able to bend it back with only an exhaust pipe a little crumbled. Would rather not buy a high clearance exhaust for a while.

I have the tail pipe above and just behind the axle (driver side). Never had exhaust gases in the cabin.

Tailpipe location probably has more to do with not causing soot marks on body. Prius tailpipes are behind the faux bumper angled down.

When the tail pipe is well before the rear axle, exhaust smell gets into the cabin under certain conditions.

The stuff that can hurt you has no smell. Either point it down (it will help while you're moving) or extend the pipe back out from under the Jeep. But from what I know, it's only a worry if you're sitting still A LOT.

I'm mostly worried about the smell and soot on my white Jeep. It's new so I don't think carbon monoxide is a problem. Under what conditions would the fumes be entering the cab?

Carbon monoxide is in the exhaust of new cars, too.
Fumes can enter the cab under any conditions.
Moving makes it less likely than sitting still.
Idling to keep the cab heated while stuck in the snow is perhaps the most likely time fumes can enter the cab.

Our other car is diesel. At our partly open parking, the wind usually comes from behind the car. Almost every time I start it (if I open the windows), I smell the exhaust...

Exit outside the body. It's going to eat rocks no matter what you do. Fix as you go. Not a big deal.
