Default 9 years, 200K miles, and Rolling Strong....The often complained about 3.8L

Ode to the 4-Door (Round 2),

Well boys and girls I finally hit 200,000 miles. It’s been fun, it’s been wild, its sometimes been a pain in my ass.
Purchased Dec. 31, 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara Black

First 5 years….
https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/jk-t...e-hand-225952/

Since April 2012 …the day I paid off my Jeep.

1) April 2012 my New Smittybuilt hardtop started leaking in exact same spot the old rotten soft top leaked. Anger!
2) December 2012 Belts were replaced
3) December 2012 gas cap light. This light is still on 11/10/15. I clear the codes and drive 100 miles and then go get an inspection sticker with Jeep still running, as a get around annually.
4) March 2013 Radiator cracked and was replaced with all hoses. $575
5) April 2013 Brake pads. I must be a terrible brake rider. I’m always changing these stupid these out.
6) August 2013 Spark Plugs/Wires @ 145,000 miles
7) Dec. 2013 Plastic shifter clips were replaced AGAIN. It’s annoying.
8) February 2014 Valve cover oil leaks. Gaskets replaced.
9) July 2014 Water pump replaced
10) January 2015 Oil pan leaks. Gaskets replaced.
11) March 2015 Transmission issues. Ended up being an electrical/computer issue. Thank God. $300
12) September 2016 Air conditioning issues..crack in the duct leading into cab. $250
13) November 10, 2015 200,000 mile mark was obtained.

As mentioned in the 100K mile post this jeep has been a tank. She’s had her problems and cost me some money, here and there, but overall she hasn’t left me stranded on the side of the road. Driven daily every day 150+ miles. Always outdoors never sheltered. Bought her in 2006 as a single man, she has seen me through marriage (2007), kid one (2011), kid two (2013), and kid No. three (2015). She continues to be pee’d on although now for different reasons…lol.

Could she be better powered, yes 3.8 isn’t great. But I couldn’t imagine a better vehicle and I’d do it all over again. I’ll see you all again @ 300,000 miles.

Happy Jeeping!

Nice post! Did you check Evap system for the gas cap light? This light come on in my 2012 JKU. The fix was just tweaking the hose that goes to the Evap canister.

Thank you for taking the time to post this as well as what little work the jeep has needed. I'm at 125k and it seems like the trend is to trade it in but I'd like to follow your lead and continue to rack up miles.

Tell me about your oil change and driving habits, please....obviously a lot of braking. I started with 3k oil changes and regular dino oil but have since moved to 10k changes with synthetic. I stick to the same brand of oil and switched to the synthetic at around 80k I suppose.

Thank you again and I look forward to continued good news out of these 3.8's!

From what ive seen most people dont really complain about the realiability its always just the lack of power. the cast iron pushrod 3.8 has been arround for ever and is well known its was just not very powerfull.

Awesome! If there have been no major failures in 200k I'd say that's a job well done for you and the Jeep!

Yes Evap hose has been tweaked, replaced, as well as canister. Countless gas caps and casket attempts were made. This vehicle was the first year of 4-doors (purchased fall '06).... there are a few items like this I just live with.

Oil change every 5K until I hit 100K miles. Then I switched to high miles synthetic and change every 10kish. Not loyal to a specific brand. I lived in Houston for 7 years so I was in traffic alot, hence the brake pad usage. Now I trek 150+ miles daily across Baton Rouge.
