Yesterday I found an unattended camp fire in the national forest near my house. I spend half an hour putting it out and using every bit of bottled water I had on hand. (Which wasn't really enough).

I'm going to start carrying several gallons of water for this kind of crap. It's the second time I've found a campsite that wasn't shut down properly in as many years. This time was worse - the flames were a foot and a half tall. Frankly, I hope the game wardens got their info and are having a good discussion with those jerks.

So - Best way to carry water? I'm considering adding a rotopax to the roof rack at least. Will those hold up to water freezing inside? (clearly, frozen water won't help the fire situation but I'd like to mount at least some to carry at all times. I can fit a rotopax to my roof rack and still clear the parking garage.

I'm planning to build a new bumper for the rear - adding water tanks to that design is sounding like a good idea.

Finally, I'd like to keep some water inside. I've had gallon jugs fail after being jostled around. Ideas for that?

 

These are available at camping world. I have seen fires in the distant mountains here in Colorado. You don't realize the devastation until you drive to those locations. Very said people do not respect the land more.

 

There are a couple companies that make rotopax mounts which attach to the rollbar. I've been tempted several times to get them but I'm also considering getting a rear shelf and they might interfere with that.

Having the rotopax inside might keep them from freezing if you have a hardtop.

I carry three 2-1/2 gallon Aquatainers on an interior shelf in the rear. Between the seat rows, on the floor, I carry a ten gallon Frontrunner hard bladder. I have it plumbed with some manual valves and an RV on-demand pump.

 

I carry a fire extinguisher. Wouldn't that be easier and more effective?

 

That or a small collapsible shovel. It seems that smothering it or using your extinguisher would be a more efficient method than carrying a lot of heavy water around. Thanks for doing your part in cleaning up other people's messes though! Amazing how careless a lot of people are.

I keep a fire extinguisher in my jeep and I carry a 7 gallon Reliance Auqa Trainer when I'm going into the forest.
