Default Just Scanning the Web and Daydreaming!

Had what I thought was an interesting idea, and just want to get some feedback, or ideas, to if my thought is even possible and how much work it may be! So I was just scanning through different trucks online, as one day I will get a truck to go alongside my Jeep, and I noticed a bunch of the RAM Trucks have the gear selector for up a gear and down a gear on the right switch gang on the steering wheel above the cruise control.

What do y'all think, would this be possible to get this wiring to work somehow with a gear selector for an '11 Automatic Wrangler? How much work could be involved here?

Like I said, just a bit of wonderin and Daydreaming here, might be a crazy or stupid idea, but for me with the Auto in an '11...this could be really useful maybe? Idk?

I bet you could get it to work on a '12 or newer JK. They use an electronic shifter for up and down shifts.

The '11 and older use a cable hooked to the trans (old school style).

Well the current gen ram only had a 6 speed or 8 speed, not sure if that wheel would play nice with the 12 and up 5 speed.

I'm thinking (don't laugh) that inside the new style JK shifter are 2 switches, one on each side, that sends a message to the trans to up-shift or down-shift when you move the lever left or right.

So, if you could splice into those wires and connect them to the Ram steering wheel shift buttons, the trans would shift.

But of course, knowing JK's, there's probably 3 or 4 computer modules monitoring all this and it will never work.

Most likely CAN bus in all cases.

If so, it also most likely either a) won't work at all ever without reflashing or b) the steering wheel control plug will plug right in to either an included mating plug at the wheel or to the shifter plug and work perfectly with no changes.

But if it's CAN bus, then you won't likely be able to pull it off with simple splices. Maybe with difficult splicing... hard to say.
