Hi-lft jack mounting options
Hey all-
I have searched all over and just can't find the right jack mounting option that will work for me. Anyone want to offer input?
I have read that the Rampage mount and ones like it can cause the jack to hit the tail light when you open the tail gate. Also I'm no huge fan of how the jack sticks up way above the top of the Jeep (I have a Smittybilt jack that's 54").
I see everyone using the hood hinge mounts but I am not interested in blocking part of my view with the jack. Just seems like a crummy place to put it. Plus those mounts cost more than the jack.
My jack won't fit in the cargo area of the Jeep with the seats up. I'm considering taking a sawzall to the jack to knock it down to 48" and maybe my options will improve.
The rear sport bar mount ideas look pretty good but seems like it'd be hard to get to when you need it, especially with the top up. Plus it also seems like that would block rearward visibility. Since I drive mostly on the road (commuting) visibility is more important to me than carrying the jack. And I have to travel 2+ hours on roads to get to anywhere that I will be off-roading so it's not a good option to just mount only when I'm going off-roading.
I have a trip planned next weekend where I'll need to take the jack. Looking for options to make this work this week. DIY is fine with me. I'm kind of leaning towards the spare-tire mount right now.
Any other ideas?
Oh, also if you guys have advice about how to carry a Jerry can, I'm all ears. Same issues there as the jack.
BTW I don't have a bumper-mounted tire carrier. My spare is mounted in the stock location.

I've had my Hi lift mounted to my hood for over a year now with no issues. It really doesn't block any visibility IMO. As for this weekend you could always just throw the jack in the back and tie it down good. I did that a couple times before I decided to permanently mount mine to the Jeep and it worked out pretty well.
I don't know if you have a 4 door or not but I used this when i had my JKUR

I replaced the nuts with some lock washers and knob type screws from the hardware store to make it a tool less install and removal to get to the jack. I also had the mount for the shovel/ax. it was high enough that it didn't block any of the view out the back. Kept it out of the weather and out of the dirt, also it was not buried under a ton of other stuff. I was even able to strap the main part of the Pul Pal to the top of the Jack which was really nice.

I have the woods one on JeepSwag website. Best one i have seen. Doesn't block. Yes it would be slightly harder to get too but it's inside the vehicle protecting it from the elements. I also have a axe and shovel.
i just stood it up behind my driver side seat and bolted it to a bracket that i have hanging from my pillar
stays like new , if i needed it its there. i had plenty of options though on rear of jeep . but chose inside due to road salt grime and dirt but i also have 2 door and removed back seat so not a issue , Also have a bottle jack style one. id never want to change a tire with a hi lift jack anyway. To Dangerous . Its really just a emergency type tool to winch or lift one side enough to place things under tires for some reason if needed.

I have the "Dave" Hi-Lift mount from Dominion Off-Road with the shovel and axe mount, to which I've added the Hi-Lift sand/mud base and I cannot see any of it in my rear view mirror. All of the is between the roof and the bottom of the roll bar.

Another vote for the jeep swag rollbar mount. It's completely out of the way and protected. It does take two minutes to get it out but I've used mine 3-4 times wheeling. Have an isolator on the handle which rest against rollbar pad so it makes no noise.
The Jeepswag and Dominion are both the "Dave" mounts, and of course they have the same problem for me which is I have a 54" jack. I presume I'd have to cut my jack down to get it to fit. The other problem is IMHO they are radically overpriced, but it hardly matters since I also can't one here and installed in time for my trip. I kind of was hoping to see some DIY options. It's way more likely I can fab up something myself to duplicate the "Dave" functionality this week.
I have the same problem with putting the jack behind the back seats: it's just too long to fit. And I used to mount it to my front tow hooks with U-bolts and it worked great, but since I swapped bumpers I don't have tow hooks to hook it on to. I guess I could pull the D rings off and come up with some solution using the D ring mounts on the bumper, but I'm not particularly fond of that idea. I just don't think it'd work well for what is going to be about a 500-mile round trip. And I don't really like the jack on the front of the Jeep.
I suppose probably the best solution for me, since I have to be leaving this week, is to cut down my jack and cram it behind the seats, strap down using the tie-down hooks. I'll have to figure some way to keep it from beating up my interior paint (I have no carpet).
