New to Unlimited
Am looking into buying a used unlimited but unsure of what year I should consider. I was wondering if there are problems with specific year models? I was wondering what year I need to avoid or seek after. I live in east Texas, and it will see highway, haul a trailer with side by side and will be an everyday ride with a small lift and around 33s. Thanks for any info
2007-2011 have the 3.8l motor which is known for being underpowered. It seems to last but lacks lacks torque and hp. Many of these are out there and if you aren't disappointed with the motor they make great Jeep's. The 2012 and some 2013s have had head challenges with the motor and many get an engine tick then need a significant repair. If you find one that had already been repaired it should be fine though. Mid 2013 or later should be good.
I agree. I have a 2012 and mine has been perfect. I even pulled a 5000 pound toy hauler for a few years. I now have 87,000 trouble free miles. No ticking head problem for me. If you find a great deal on a 2012 I'd go for it. The head warranty has been extended to 150,000 miles. Since you want to pull a trailer, absolutely go for the 2012 or newer. Oh yeah, the vast majority of jeeps have crappy 3.21 gear ratio. Do yourself a favor and only accept 3.73 or 4.10 (rubi). The 3.21 will be a dog pulling the trailer, particularly when you put on bigger tires.
+1^^^^. The 3.6L went in the '12, but starting in '13 there were some interior updates including the seats which are a little more comfortable. As far as the various creature comforts, that's all going to be subjective to your use. I'd suggest finding one in stock form rather than something that has already been lifted. I'd much rather start from scratch than to be stuck trying to figure out someone else's mistake.
