On a stock sahara w/4.1 gears, what would you do first, or what would you do for ~$1500? I was goint to regear to 4.10 until I realized I had them alrady (helps to read the window sticker sometimes...). So now what? Regear to 4.88, which is what I am thinking right now? I have an auto and it did seem to search for a gear in CO on long uphill Hwys.

New wheels/tires excluded...the 18"s will do...for now....

Just got back from a roadtrip to to AZ-UT-CO-NM...she seemed to do okay on the trails I did, only thing that caused me to turn back is driver inexperience...

Most important thing to m is being able to get to the trailhead, not a rockcrawler nor will I be doing any serious mudding.

Not sure anout a 2.5" BB right now, while running stock wheels/tires. Have thought about intake/exhaust upgrades.

Not as concerned with looks as I am with performance...

any and all suggestions appreciated....but if you could do only one thing or a combo for $1500 what would YOU do?

AGREED, the bridgestones must go, but in due time, in due time . eventually some steel 16s with 32-33, at which point will go with a 2.5" BB, if not before. My first idea is to re-gear to 4.88, if not go with the 2.5 BB, maybe some under armor )(diff, oil, pan, etc) and maybe do wheels in the fall, or hopefully once my wife gets tired of listening to me gripe about the 18's I am doing my best to put some holes in the tires around town.....Thought about some new bumpers, need to know about weight and such things, don't want to increase the rake, but that could go hand-in-hand with the 2.5" BB as I have heard the TF 2.5 raises the front end a little more??

Any opinions about the re-gear?

Other things include cargo rack for gear (couple dogs take space in the back), but those are easy to get past the missed as "needs". She's the practical type..

I figure I can do something now and then something in the fall. Just attempting to prioitize.

Thanks guys! I never did anything to my 89 sahara, should've kept it and played with it.

OME 2" lift (by no means a budget boost, but worth every penny), bigger tires (35"), and differential guard skid plates/covers...you'll get a decent ride height lift with the OME and tires, and protect those oh so important differentials...if you know how to shop, you should be able to do this for about $1500 or so...you'll have the essentials for some pretty challenging off road adventures...old school off roaders always talked lifts and tires as a means of avoiding as much as possible off road hazards...new wave off roaders think you need $900 rocker guards, $1000 dollar bumpers...$2000 winches...500+ pounds of undercarriage skid plates...with a good lift and increase in tire size, you should be good to go. I'm "Old School"...I've been doing it for over 40 years, and I know what works.

Thanks Dustoff '68.

Could you expand on the difference between the Old Man Emu lift you mention and the Terraflex BB 2.5 that a lot of people get? I am leaning that way, as I want to see how I do on my next trip to CO in June before I re-gear.

thx!

I would go with the Woods Evap relocation kit and Steering stablizer relocate bracket. skid plate , some sort of mud terrain tires, TF 2.5BB from Northridge4x4.com, high lift , arb deflator, air compressor, straps, Oh Poop handles.

Yes, I like what you are saying about the OMEs. I have had them ( full kit) on all my 4x4s down here in South Africa from 1993 and I must say that all in all they are hard to beat when you look at other suspension systems. OMEs seem to work well for us down here in Africa ,but lets see how they do on the JK. Will get back to you guys and tell you what I think.

the OME is pretty much the "complete kit" simple at that....springs and shocks....OME has the reputation of doing incredibly expensive R&D, and once they are satisfied (and they never really are), the product hits the streets...with the exception of a minor 1/4" off center for your drive line, this can be corrected (for the OCD in you) by purchasing an adjustable track bar...one recommended by Dave at Northridge is the Full Traction one at $188.00...all the rest (budget boosts, that is) does not leave me with a warm and fuzzy feeling...too many parts, or too much drilling/alterations...parts that are an after thought after numerous complaints by customers...never heard that once about OME gear...you will pay the price, but well worth it.
