Default Sleeve aftermarket D44 housing? Pointless?

I purchased a tera44 axle housing with the 3.25” x 0.25” tubes. I got a good deal on the axle, otherwise I would have purchased the 0.5” wall version instead.

I’m thinking about putting a 2.75”x0.25” sleeve in it. I keep going over the numbers and part of me feels like it is strong enough as it is and to just leave it alone, then again making it effectively 0.5” wall would make it bullet proof!! Is it worth the trouble?

Waste of time and money, I hope the deal you got was not on a stock width axle.

Yeah it’s stock width, otherwise it wouldn’t fit all my internals. I’m not sure what exactly your saying is a waste of money. Sounds like you think the whole thing is a waste of money.

what’s wrong with stock length anyway?

You are putting big wide tires on an axle designed for a small narrow tire. Proper width for tire size has better steering, less wear and tear, and lessens the likelihood of bending flanges. Your inner axle shafts would not fit but everything else would.

The bigger issue is using bulletproof with D44 and 37's. That's not a bulletproof combo by any stretch. Tube wall thickness isn't going to be your key concern as you go through all the weak links in that setup.

You think spending money an any Dana 44 is a waste of money, so the answer coming from you doesn’t really hone in on my original question.

Playing around with a tubing deflection calculator it looks like, as it sits 3.25x0.25 tube is about 240% stronger than stock, and 3.25x0.5 tube is 380% stronger than stock.

That is a pretty big difference...

I think that of a dana 30 not the dana 44. But if you are going to spend money a 44 you might as do it right. Do you spend a lot of time ramming your jeep into stuff where you need 380% stronger axle tubes? How much force does it take to shear off a ball joint on a dana 44? How about how much force to rip the control arm bracket off of the frame? Are you concerned about running a 37" tire on an axle thats ring and pinion were designed for a max 35" tire? Are you concerned about these things or are you targeting just the axle tube itself?

Or are you just mad because you thought you got a deal when you really should have done some more research and bought a proper axle. You even have another thread where you were asking about upgrading shafts. Are planning on running factory shafts in your big fancy new teraflex housing?
