Default Limp mode after lift install?

Hoping you all have some thoughts on this. I searched but didn’t come up with anything definitive.

About a month ago I purchased a 2016 JKUR Auto with 46K miles. It was bone stock other than 285 MK3 tires.. I’ve put a little over 500 miles on it in the last month with no issues.

Yesterday I installed a 2.5” RE lift with Teraflex adjustable lower front control arms and an adjustable front track bar. Got the axle and steering wheel centered before the first drive.

First test drive went fine, but then second time out the Jeep went into limp mode after a short drive. Fell flat on its face when hitting about 4K RPM in every gear. No dash lights...

Got it home, let it sit, and then took for another 30 minute drive with no issues.

Haven’t pulled codes with a scanner yet, but no codes using the 3 key/dash method.

Anyway, I can only assume that something from the lift install caused the limp mode as it has driven flawlessly until now.

If you were diagnosing, where would you look first? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

You really need a scanner that can read the different modules deeper than just common codes. Jscan app is a very useful tool that has programming capabilities and a powerful diagnostic portion. If you get thrown in limp mode, there is going to be a code sitting in the tranny module. It's really hard to guess at things in this case. It is very often caused by ABS issues, but that would have been apparent if you were flashing the ABS/traction lights before hand. The other common issue is not programming after a regear, but that doesn't seem to be relevant here. There's nothing you would have done installing the lift that should have interfered with anything that would throw you in limp mode.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I just dug up my scanner and ran diagnostics. No stored or pending codes in the engine or transmission modules.

Drives normal until RPM's hit 4K, and then power completely drops off until RPM's drop off. If I slowly accelerate, it seems to get up to speed just fine... but if it downshifts, power cuts off.

Reading more, it sounds like true "limp mode" forces the Jeep into 2nd gear... is this correct?

Yes, limp mode does not allow you to cycle through gears. You're stuck in 2nd gear. You have some weird symptoms going on. Surely has to be a coincidence that you just installed suspension lift.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping it had something to do with the lift install like possibly damaging a wheel speed sensor harness or something. It almost acts like the transmission is slipping, but it seems to be computer generated as power drops off at exactly the same RPM no matter what gear.

To be clear, you had no issues at all, you have changed tire sizes and have programmed the new tire size, and now you're being thrown into limp mode after that change? No regear, no other changes? What are you using to program the tire size?

Hello...the story is the previous owner had issues with light coming in ..he would clear code and drive with no issues. It has 513 with 37s. I buy it..it starts throwing gear codes....mainly 0733...consistency goes into limp mode..some times no engine light comes on. Took to dealership...they said internal....Took to different granny shop they said internal...both also said not sure until they rip it open. I think Electrical..the last tranny shop said different hearing codes...1 2 3 5 ..they were not sure why. I am using ADV procal. Diablo programer corrupted.

Thanks all for the replies. I thought I would report back on what the issue was. It ended up being the hood insulation getting sucked into the air intake. Removed the insulation and all is good. It's crazy, the insulation only sits maybe 3/4" above the intake opening. Anyway, hope this helps someone in the future.

Thank you for following up. SO many just leave the thread hanging. That has to be the first time I've heard that happening.
