Default Anyone regret 4.56’s on 35’s? (2 door, 3.6 auto)

Yet another one of these, sorry folks.

Has anyone regretted going with 4.56 gears for 35’s?

Regearing next week. 2016 2 door auto rubicon.

I have spent the last 2 months re-reading almost every thread I can find on any Jeep related forum, most I had read previously when deciding to go with 35’s as a good middle ground tire size.

I still can not decide.

every shop I talked to strongly suggested 4.56, but I am concerned I’ll wish I went with 4.88.

95% highway or city street driving. Elevation 800 feet to 1400. Off-road parks are 3-4 hours away. Mostly mud, some rocks. Goal is to off-road 1-2 a month if I can find time. Would be more Frequent if I lived closer to them.

been on 3.73’s for last 9 months with 35’s, and a couple years on 32’s w/ 3.73’s.

Go with the 4.88 my opinion. Over 70mph in these things you are pushing wind so bad the gas consumption is horrible.

Solid argument.

Appreciate the response. Definitely leaning me towards 4.88’s.

I like the versatility 4.88’s seem to offer, where 4.56 seems better oriented to 33’s-35’s

i can say 3.73’s on 32’s left a lot to be desired and my dads 4.10’s with 32’s on his rubi wasn’t a huge amount different, but better.

Also would like to get the ARS roof rack setup at a point.

The frustrating in deciding on my end is it seems pretty well split 50/50 for 4.56 vs 4.88. I wish there was an obvious worse choice but either would work.

4.56 gonna get you back to around stock performance. 4.88s will lean a bit aggressive at highway speeds for a lot of folks, but living around 3k rpm isn't too bad. Fuel economy is what it is when you go modding these jeeps. If you don't mind a higher revving engine on the highway then you'd appreciate the additional umph the 4.88s will give you. I've skipped 3 gear sets in one shot before. It's a nice change but certainly won't feel like you got extra HP .

haha yeah. I’m not expecting it to feel like it’s got a super charger but would love a bit more ‘pep’ to it.

did you end up at more like 3k? The chart isn’t everything but looks to be more like 2800 on 34’s vs 2600ish. Not like everyone doesn’t have the chart memorized by know LOL.

One thing I remember was one of the CS guys I talked to mentioning he’s seen guys too over geared to be able to do well in mud. He advised against 4.88’s and 35’s for that reason. He said it was just too much to get the wheels spinning.

move been wheeling in severely under geared to moderately undergeared Jeeps for the last 5 years, by no means hardcore nor extreme, but I got stuck a lot more on 3.07’s and a TJ vs 4.56’s with the same tires.

any reason 4.88’s would be too much for mud and 35’s? (I guess if it is, 36-37’s here I come haha)

Keep in mind that most folks aren't driving 70mph on the highway, at least not around me. So if you get up to 75mph or more, you're gonna be right around 3k rpm. You get used to higher revs and the engine response is much nicer when you put the peddle down. I've lived in the 3k range for a good while. My last axle swap dropped me down to 4.88s with 37s and over time I've missed my old 5.13s more and more. On the interstate I'm just under 3k rpm....with my old gears I was a touch over 3k ~75mph.

I avoid mud like the plague so I can't speak too much to that, but think about the amount of time you're driving that jeep vs. the amount of time you're in some bog. Gear for your driving. The difference between the two gear sets isn't going to make that much difference in the mud IMO.

makes sense, thank you.

I’d like to avoid the mud, but it’s jsut what we have up here. Not like those 4x4 competitions in a mud pit, but more super clay/iron rich sitting water/mud.

I’ve been pressure washing the Jeep every week in winter to get the salt off of it and I still can’t get it all off, from September and October.

What’s the true size of your 37’s? A lot I’ve been looking at more like 35.5-36ish which seems ideal in my head for 4.88’s.

My E-rated Toyos are probably in that range inflated to 26/27psi and under load (measuring from garage floor to hub center and multiplying by 2). Most people crave the look, but they are a good bit more hassle to run IMO.

Yeah absolutely. I’d be happy with a true 35, or a 35-36 range, but of course it’s always “gosh I wish I went up to the next size”

The TJ was obvious. Manual, 33’s, 4.56… this there seems to be no wrong answer.

i see on the other forum tons of guys are happy with 5.13’s and 35’s. I feel 4.88’s is a good balance between power and drive ability as a DD.

Seeing you are seeking a TRUE 35" .. I run 2 sets of Toyo's OC AT3.. 35 - 12.50 and 11.50s on my rigs.. the 11.50s measured @ 25psi on 8.5" rims 33.5". the 12.50s measured at 34 on 9" rims. Good luck finding a TRUE 35.. PSI was derived by the "Chalk Test" COLD.. BTW the 12.50s are on a 6 speed '13 JKU running 4.10s .. All is Good with that set up for us.
