How Much Thread Is Actually Left?
Hey Guys I Have Pics Of Some Tires I Might Buy 35 12.5 17 Nitto Muds Was Wondering If Nebody Could Tell How Much Tread Is Left From The Pics If Its A Good Deal At 650.00 Thanks
OR have him take them to a tire store and they should have a tread depth gauge - have them get the reading off of it and look up the "new" tread depth and compare... A depth caliper works too to get a real accurate measurement then take the number and compare it to the new number. Remember when calculating the tread left that 0/32 is NOT wore out - 2/32 or 3/32 is at the treadwear indicators - so subtract that from the measured depth number! Otherwise you'll be paying for tread you can't use!
Just as important as the measurement is the wear pattern (cupping from bad shocks, scrubbing or feathering from alignment issues, etc.) and if there's any off-road damage (patches, chunking, etc.)
Also - what I use as a rule of thumb on used tire - figure out the % life left then take that off the price new and then take off an additional 20-25% and that's a "good deal" any less and you're not getting any benefit - especially if your tire stores do road hazzard, rotations, etc. (i.e. a $200 new tire, 75% remaining - $150 'value' of tread left, then 20% 'discount' you're at $120 ea.)
Make sense??
