Question Will Toyo Open Country M/T 295/70R17 fit on stock Rubicon rims

I have a 2007 JK with OEM stock 17" Moab Rubicon wheels. I would like to mount Toyo Open Country M/T tires on these wheels. I really do not want to buy new wheels for any reason. Based on my research, the Toyo tires seem to me to offer the best balance of road worthiness and off road performance--plus I think they look really super.

Toyo recommends a minimum wheel width of 8 inches for these tires, so the 7.5 inches of the Rubicon will mean the tires will be sucked in a bit at the bead. This should not be a huge issue (any comments re would be appreciated).

My question is: At @ 33.5 inch overall diameter and an 11.9 inch section width, will these tires fit on my Sahara? I do not ever plan to lift the Jeep and I am not interested in buying another set of wheels. Will I need a set of spacers? If so, would I need 1.5 inches (Spidertrax?)? Would I need spacers front and rear? I've been trying to figure this out on my own, but it's like bashing my head on a wall. I give up! Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

FYI, I do no real off roading, and zero rock crawling, so maximum articulation will never be needed. 95% of my driving is in the DC Metro area. There are huge pothole problems here, but no trees to climb with my Jeep. I really am most interested in an off road, beefy, aggressive look without sacrificing too much road manners and performance. That's why I'd like the Toyos, and the 295/70R17 is the smallest diameter and width they make for a 17" wheel.

Thanks very much for any help/advice/comments. Cheers!

Are you sure you have the Rubicon wheels? Unless you bought them or had them swapped out, you would not have these on a Sahara. Either way, they will fit. You will need (5) wheel spacers though if you do the spare and at least 1". I used the 1" Teraflex spacers and works great on stock Sahara wheels with 35x12.5x18. Good luck.

Hey Mauro, welcome to the forum!

Where did you find that size for that tire? I don't see it listed on their site....

Thanks for the warm welcome! My Sahara actually came with 18 inch wheels and Bridgestone Dueler 255/70R18s. I found out that it isn't easy to find beefy off-road tires for these without either going to a relatively lower profile or lifting the Jeep, neither of which I want to do. So, I found a good deal on set of OEM JK 17 inch Rubicon wheels with machined faces from a dealer. They're nice because the machined face is brighter than the silver painted faces of the Sahara wheels. I'll keep the 18s in the garage just in case I decide to do something else down the road. Anyway, that's why my Sahara has Rubicon wheels! I do think the 1/2 inch less than recommended in wheel width won't be a real problem with these Toyo tires. should work OK.

My only real concerns are whether the 33.5 inch diameter and nearly 12 inch section width will cause rubbing on the sway bars, control arms, the air dam, or anywhere else. From some of your comments, I take it that I will definitely need spacers though. Is this right? If so, would 1.5 inch Spidertrax work well and eliminate all of my potential rubbing issues with these Toyo 295/70R17 tires? Finally, why would I need a spacer for the spare? I thought that would just work with the tire carrier as-is. Thanks a lot for all of your help! Mauro

Default ...I forgot to mention...

...I forgot to mention that I called Toyo and they told me that this size (295/70R17) is now available for the Open Country M/T in the US. They are expensive but I think they're cool! Cool! M

Also, you won't need a spacer for the stock spare tire, the 295/70/17 is a perfect fit with little room to spare!!!!
