Default JK Unlimited hwy/city/offroad compromise

I just ordered a JK Unlimited X (23S, black, 4x4, manual, 4.10, side-impact airbags). It's got a lot of firsts for me:

*first Jeep
*first vehicle I've purchased new
*first vehicle I've financed
*only purchase I've ever made from a dealer
*only car I've ever spent more than $3,000 on

I had to justify it to myself by saying I'd use it as a promotional vehicle as well (this also allows me to spend money on modifications without feeling too guilty).

This Jeep will see its share of time off-road. If you can't afford to break it doing what it's made to do, you can't afford to own it. It will also be my daily driver and will see its share of highway miles and take its share of road trips.

I'd like to do what I can to it without making it unpleasant on the highway and without killing fuel economy, handling, acceleration and braking. The general consensus of the owners I know is that I should be able to add a 2.5" lift and 33" tires without adversely affecting too much.

I'm curious to know what those of you with some experience recommend for this vehicle.

Thumbs up

Congrats! I think you made a great choice. From everything I've learned on this site your choice of lift and tire size should work well. I plan to do something very similar with my Rubicon. 3" lift with either 33's or maybe
34's depending on how high it looks with the lift. Your wait time sounds like it will be much shorter than the Rubi. ( 3-4 months ). If you keep the tire size to 33" you probably won't have to regear.

You could get the suspension and tires from a Rubicon owner that is upgrading and install them on your X and probably not dent your wallet to much either. You'd have a modest lift and tires and not allot of change to the street performance of your Jeep. Hook up with PlugJug....

Just eyeballing it, and assuming the stock tires on the 16" alloys are about 30 inches in diameter, the 4.10 rear-end should put me at the same RPMs with 33 inch tires as I would have with 30 inch tires with a 3.23:1 ratio.

(math)
It seems like a percentage increase in circumference distance travelled divided by pi gives you the equivalent percentage increase in diameter. Not sure if I'm right or not; thought about it while grocery shopping.
