Default does a 2" lift "require" longer shocks

So I want to add a couple of inches of lift to my stock 2dr Rubi while I wait for the original tires to wear out.. When that happens I want to go to a 3-4" lift and 33-35" tires... I hate to put much money into this lift when I'll just be replacing it all down the road..

So can the stock shocks take a 1 3/4 to 2" hockey puck lift?

If not, I may just add a 1" or so to the front to level it out some.

Thanks

Yes. Longer shocks or shock extenders will be required with 2" of lift. Otherwise, the coil will be continuously compressed and limited by the fully-extended shock absorber. You might get away with it if you have less than 2", but that's about the limit.

There are inexpensive budget boost kits that come with coils spacers and shock extenders for a couple hundred bucks.

This kit from Terrflex comes with coil spacers and shock adapters and is $265 at Northridge 4x4. Speak with David and tell him JK-Forum sent you.

Good luck.

If you go less than 2 inches, you won't have a problem with the stock shocks. I had an 1 3/4 BB on mine and had no problems.

I agree, but if he's pushing 2", he's better off with extenders. Flex will be limited to the extended length of your stock shocks. For a few bucks more, you get a little more flex and avoid hitting your stock shocks' limit.

you'll be just fine with your stock rubi shocks on pavement but your flex will be limited on the trail - A LOT.

This is a little over the top.

The shocks that COME with many of the 2-3" lifts are only about 24" fully drooped.

The Old Man EMU shocks are barely longer than the stock shocks (Luckily, they have longer versions in the pipe line...)..and no one talks about them/the OME Lift Kit damaging the coils either.

The stock shocks are about 22" fully drooped.

So, if the coils were SO compressed by the shock's lack of travel, they would have been that compressed BEFORE the lift too.

It would essentially mean a JK with a lift kit and the included longer shocks could not droop an axle lower than ride height.

The REAL story is that you COULD do quite a tall lift with stock shocks, and no damage would happen at all, except you would have progressively less down travel from the progressively higher new ride heights.

A coil spacer does nothing on droop, once the axle is dropping away from the coil's support range...it becomes irrelevant. Gravity, and the leverage from the OPPOSITE end of the axle, is providing down force on the drooped side.

Shocks are NORMALLY a limiting factor on droop, to the point that MANY lift makers, and even OEM's, MAKE the shock the droop limiter.

So its designed to reach its end of travel, and prevent further travel.

For example - take a front stock shock, on a non-lifted JK, its at about 18" total length at ride height.

It can go to 22"..... another 4" of lift.

Of course, AT 4" of lift, its completely pre-drooped, and has no down travel left, etc.

At 2" of lift, it would have roughly the same down travel left as if it were the OME 2" lift kit shock, or ~ another 2" of down travel.

So - I feel longer shocks are the way to go...but, if the question being asked in this thread is "CAN I leave it like that?"...the answer is YES. (It will merely be worthless off road)

You could ALSO run a 16" to 27" (11" travel) shock on a STOCK JK, with no lift of any kind, and it would merely articulate like a Mo Fo.

Thanks for the advice.. Yes, I do know that it would compromise some flex off-road but I'm willing to live with that for the next year or so.. Just didn't want to do any damage to the system..

thanks again..

BTW.. Had the jeep on the driveway this weekend and by using a jack in the front and rear I think I've decided to go with a 1 3/4" in the front and a 3/4" in the rear. This gives me a little lift and levels out the jeep quite nicely.. Since adding the winch and tow brackets to the front, it had dropped a little over stock..

thanks again

Where could one go about finding such a shock? Would you go with something different if you had, say, a 1" body lift and 33s?
