Default MUD'ng and 4W??

Hey - when going thru mud, should I keep the tranny in 4WH all the time and just try to keep forward momentum...? I was wondering if I would ever need 4WL in mud? Would that help at all if you got stuck? I hear many saying your worst enemy in mud is spinning tires but then when you see vids...people are going thru mud redlining their rigs! Confusing...!

Anyone clarify the right and wrong way to go about it?

Thanks

There is no hard and fast answer, but consider this:
There is no doubt that momentum is a friend we all rely on when trying to get through something, but if there is a good probability that momentum won’t be enough to clear the obstacle, spinning wheels then become a liability. Spinning wheels are hole diggers. They make the problem worse once momentum is gone.
4Low relies on traction and torque to PULL through an obstacle. 4 High relies on speed and momentum to PUSH through.
So how far will momentum take you? That depends on the drag fighting against it. A brick wall will stop momentum fast. Deep water crossings can stop momentum just about as fast. Mud will slow it down, but it may offer just enough traction to keep going.
If I can’t punch through it without a lot of thought, I go 4 Low. Not only is it safer, it’s a hole lot easier on your rig than spinning tires that suddenly find traction.

4 high if you're really going mudding. 4 low if you're like me and need to get through a hole, hate mud, and would rather get stuck then barrel through a hole. Either way momentum is critical.

4 high will allow you to spin the tires which will assist in cleaning them. You'll be going no where fast if your treads become slicks because of the mud. It wont matter how much torque you have.

OP, you will find out very quickly what works and what doesn't. If you look at these guys signatures telling you 4 hi, you will notice most of them are rubis with 4.10's. You have 3.21 gears and a six speed. Trust me that is not enough gear and you will wind up burning out your clutch, but you will find that out as soon as you get into it. I have found with my 3.21's and 32's, I can't do anything offroad in 4hi. But in mud try 4lo 2nd gear. Works pretty good. And watch peoples sigs to see what gears they have before taking their advice.

Once again though, you will find out for yourself when you do it! Hurry up get it muddy and report!!!!!!!

My personal opinion.

Some say lockers in mud are bad. I do not agree, getting stuck with lockers usually just means you are more stuck than you would have been. We can debate variant degrees of stuckness later, btw.

I like to use 4l (and I even have a Rubi) when in mud, all it takes to clean the wheels is a small tap on the gas and wham, they are clean. Just gotta watch the tack. I mean who really needs to go more than 20mph jacking around in the mud anyway. Unless you're in a mud bog race.

I did find that on a previous 08' jeep that 3.21's and a stick trying to mud in 4h are a bad combination with 35's. Not enough wheel spin when you need it.

Not all mudding is Balls to the Wall. These thing crawl through mud like nobodys business, And we don't even need trees to guide us back to the trails as bumpers.

But I prefer to finess a mud pit more than barreling through one. Less damage that way. But thats just a personal preference too.
