Default Opinions on sway bar disconnects and lockers??

I'm looking for some advice here. I've got a 2008 2dr X and i've been looking into discos and lockers. I use my jeep as a daily driver and I do some offroading (nothing too crazy) about every other weekend. Is it worth it to spend the money on these upgrades or should i just worry about the lift/tires/winch?

It depends on what you do.

If you wheel alone, a winch is a very good thing to get early on. If you are always with another truck or two, it's nice to have but you can usually get by without one until you tackle something nasty.

The best modification I've ever made on any truck has been lockers, bar none.

The only time I've ever regretted putting a locker into an axle was my very first locker back when I ran a D35 in my YJ. It died pretty quickly. I wouldn't buld up a weak axle again after that. If your idea of wheeling is deep mud, you may not find lockers help a lot, as they'll mostly enable you to get stuck in even deeper mud, and you'll wish you'd bought the winch.

Sway bar disconnects are a great value for the money, and they are definitely nice to run.

Chris.

Too many unknowns to answer this...

In my world, the "musts" are all of the above, not one thing over another.

If you wheel in a place that needs lockers then get lockers. If you need articulation, then get the sway bar disconnects. Do you need a lift and tires? Or just want it for the looks?

Get what you "need" first then go for the rest. Only you know your wheeling style to determine what you actually need....

I know these are tough decisions.

I run 2 Jeeps A 98 TJ 4 cylinder with 2 inch lift and 32 inch tires, and 07 JK Unlimited with 3 inch lift and 33 inch tires ( basic mods )... I REFUSE ABSOLUTLY REFUSE!! to put lockers in either one!!!! Take your Jeep out with a friend and learn to drive it BONE STOCK. I drove my TJ on the trails stock for a year. every weekend. By the end of the year i was doing some MINOR black trails comletey bone stock. Now I play with the big boys on all the black and red trails with both of my Jeeps. I usually drive the TJ and the wife drives the JK. No lockers always the smallest Jeep in the bunch, but the Jeep that usually has the best time on the trails. SO if you take the time to learn your JK, and how to finnesse it over the obstacles, you dont need any of the listed above. After you learn to handle your JK, then lift and tires to get on the harder trails without body damage. This is the same advice i give to all the guys who ask me at work what mods to put on their Jeep when they buy it..... just get it, and wheel it BONE STOCK. Then lift it.

Get your disco's first.....it greatly improves your offroad ability.....then get a lift and some tires, then everything else...youde be surprised how good the brake locker is on the JK's, youlle only need lockers when doing hard trails..youde be amazed what it can do as stock......hope this helps...also do a shitload of reading on here...

I agree, the discos are a cheap, no-brainer mod. And since you say you don't do anything "too crazy" off-road, you may find that a lift and good tires are a better investment than lockers. Since your Jeep is a daily driver and involves snow (maybe ice potential?) you would want selectable lockers anyways. Also, by doing the lift/tires first, you can see if you'll need/want a gear change, if so then that would be the time to do a locker install. The winch is always a good thing to have available.

Well, there's lots of good advice so far, and I don't think I can really add anything new. From my limited experience, I'd say TRACTION is the primary aim, and with that said, I'd go disco's first, then lift/tires, then lockers/upgraded axles.

I can't disagree with learning to wheel bone stock either. Learn to finesse that skinny pedal, and learn tire placement.

My local club has encouraged me to use lockers as a last resort, which has actually made my wheeling more fun and deliberate. We refer to it as the "easy button", and it sure is nice when all else fails.

Since I have a Rubicon, I am stock with f/r lockers, Dana 44 axles, and discos.
