Default Using a come-along for extraction

Has any body out there ever used a come-along to pull their Jeep out of the mud?

I can't afford a winch/bumper set up right now and was wondering if an 8000lb ratchet come-along I saw at Harbor Freight would be worth having.

I have a couple of times. One was for an old YJ that was axle high in mud and that was alot of work but it did work. I use it mainly for anchoring my jeep if I'm winchin somebody out. I'll put it on my rear bumper and anchor it to a tree to keep me from sliding. It is alot of work but it does work just make sure it's rated enough 8000lbs should be enough.

I used a come-along sevral times for my YJ. Works great - perhaps a bit slow compared to some.

i have always used 2 tow straps - One looped around a tree and to one hook of the ComeAlong and one straight to the Jeep.

I did this because there is not a tremendous amount of "length" in the pulley'd cable that is on the come along spool. depending on how far you need to winch you may find yourself readjusting mutliple times to move a fair distance. I only had to do that one. The 8-10 feet that I got was usualyy enough to get me to a new traction spot...

how much is it? when you can get a winch for 300 bucks, i can't see ever using a come along ever again.
It's only about 30 bucks. It's just something to have as a last resort until I get a winch and bumper.

I'm not working right now so even $300.00 is a lot of money to spend on a non-nescessity.

For what it is worth...I do not have a winch or a reason to. I do have a come-alonf in my truck box for just in case. I would still have it even with a winch. If you but one buy a good one. You will be disappointed if you ever need to use it and it is a cheap model. Most inexpensive versions are junk and 8000 lbs adds up quick when you and a buddy are stuck.

Get it and end this.

I really wish that I had bought one when I was stuck in the snow last winter and had to dig myself out for 4 hours. I just needed a little tug to get me out.

I have my come-along with me all the time. It's very handy in many situations like if you have to pull back a little or anchor your jeep from uphill side to keep you from sliding down while using front winch to move slowly forward etc. I use it regularly, it's slow but when i am offroad i am not rushing anywhere anyway. Sometimes i keep thinkering to have a smaller removable winch with side and rear att.points but come-along is doing it fine.
