Default 9500 or 12000 lbs?

I was looking at the Ramsey 9500 on Quadratec http://www.quadratec.com/products/92142_201_07.htm and wondering if 9500 lbs would be enough. I've often heard that for winches, bigger is always better. Then again, a snatch block or two, and maybe a line extension, the 9500 lbs might be plenty.

This will be my first Jeep, first winch, etc., so I was hoping some of the old timers around here might chime in with an opinion.

I'm not looking to do much rock crawling, but deep mud, creeks, steep inclines, etc., are definately in the future for this Jeep. :-)

Thanks,
js.

Well, bigger simply isn't always needed. The rule of thumb is to have a winch that has double the capacity of your vehicles weight and in the the case of a JK Unlimited Rubicon with Auto Tranny (the heaviest version available), the curb weight is 4,129 lbs. Double that and you have 8,258 lbs. so a 9,500 winch should be more than enough for ya.

Hm. Add two steel bumpers, winch, expedition roof rack, dog, canoe camping equip., hi-lift, pull-pal, etc., etc., and I think we might be closer to 4,800+ lbs. Still ok for a 9500 lbs winch?

Yup. It's just a rule and for the most part, you will never get need the full potential of your winch especially if you use it in conjunction to a snatch block as you should in really tough pulls.

As WOL mentioned, it's a rule of thumb, hence not exact. I think you're going to be just fine with a 9500 lb model. With or without steel bumpers and gear.

Well, are you planning on keeping your factory bumper or is it expendable? If you are planning to replace it, most aftermarket bumpers can be purchased with winch plates built into it. But, if you need to keep it, I saw this winch plate over in Moab that I think is made by T-Max...

haha, yea 9500 lbs will be way enough...im getting an m8000. reguardless of what people tell you on here, an 8k warn winch will pull you your gear, dog, wife, kids, canoe, food etc...etc...where ever you want to go. 9500 is almost to much in some sense...lets not forget, you will be helping the winch out by turning the tires over as your winching.

I kind of liked the one Puddlz had? Anyone know what model that was. I suppose I could PM him or zoom in on some of the pictures from our ride the other day. But hey, I'm a busy guy!

Eddie, that looks identical to the a Warn Winch Plate that someone just mounted on a thread in here.
