Pulled a car from a snow bank...
My dad had Jeeps back in the day, he had a 78 (I think) CJ-7. We lived in Amarillo Texas. It snowed a lot.
He would pile us all in that tiny Jeep, I can't believe we all fit it in, and would drive around helping people who had gotten stuck in the snow. I've always wanted to do that.
Flash forward to the present, we now live in Utah, I have a 2008 Jeep X Unlimited my wife bought me. For Christmas my dad got me a tow rope. I was excited that I was now prepared to help anyone stuck in the snow, just like he was... and a little nervous at the same time, cars are mostly plastic, people now-a-days are more sue happy if something went wrong... etc.
I was leaving my home and noticed a girl trying to back her car out. The winter this season dropped a ton of snow and she was stuck in a huge drift. The snow plows only help to bury cars parked on the side of the road too. Her front tires were spinning, even after she got out. A few other neighbors grabbed shovels and began to dig her out, but I stopped and asked if they would rather I pull them out.
They were about as nervous as I was saying yes. I have never done it before and I was afraid of damaging their car. I take a look underneath and see a good place to hook the rope, nothing plastic, it was the steel frame.
I hook the other end on my Jeep, set it to 4 wheel drive and SLOWLY, probably too slow, haha, I drive forward. Suddenly I hear horrible sounds and think the worst, but everyone says it's ice breaking off the bottom of her car, phewsh!
Finally the car broke free with little effort from the Jeep (seemingly) and she was on her way... saved some time and a few neighbor's backs I'm sure. It was fun too.
I made sure to let my dad know that I used his Christmas gift and helped someone get out of a snow bank

good for you-and thanks for being someone who cares-I only hope if that ever happens to my wife, its someone like you who arrives to help!
-that's of course if my Jeep's unavailable, which wont help my case any when I want to add mod's!!!!!!
One thing to keep in mind that someone told me; when possible let the owner of the car being pulled hook up their end of the strap, and you hook up your end of the strap to your vehicle. I have been told that if the owner hooks the strap up poorly to their vehicle and something is damaged, it is their loss. However, if you hook the strap to their vehicle and something is damaged, then you are at fault. On the times when I need to hook it up myself to their vehicle, because they are unable to, or may not know how to, then I make sure I select a good location like you did, and make sure to really take it easy on the pull.
