Benefits of a long arm lift?
I was just wondering what the all around advantages of having a long arm lift are. do you get more flex? is it more for people who use there Jeep on the rocks? How does it perform for just a weekend trail explorer/ daily driver?
The best part about them IMO is that it keeps your control arm geometry more like what came from the factory. When you get 4"+ of lift your control arm points down real steep. this makes the ride on the road rough and squirly sometimes. The long arm corrects. these angles to make the ride improve. Piginajeep said his FT long arm with 3" springs rides softer than stock.
The longer the arm the less angle you will have for a given lift height between the control arm and the horizontal line; then when you pass over an obstacle if the axle (or part of the axle) need to go up (or down) if you do the math, the geometry is less affected; i.e. your axle will remain in the same line (vertical) with less horizontal travel.
My wife instist on every Jeep we own has a long arm lift. Why? For the ride. You can cruise at 80mph for hours and not feel road tired. For me it is the smoothness of the atriculation and the amount of articulation a long arm gives. From what you described of your off roading it will be the comfortable ride of a lifted Jeep that will handle dirt roads like pavement, especially if you air down to 15-20 psi. This is mine and my wife's opinion of course, and therefore we are will to pay the extra doe for one.
Improved road manners and handling. When I lifted mine I went from bone stock to 37's/4" TeraFlex LA and 5:13's. I was very very happy and impressed with how it turned out. The ride and handling was better than stock. On the trail, it's very comfortable, usually I find myself going too fast. I don't miss my old 92 XJ that much anymore!
