Default Submerged Winching?

So I have always wondered, and now that I am in the market for a winch, what happens if you submerge your winch and you need to use it? will it work for a short distance? Like maybe just getting your tires up on the ruts of a deeole instead of down in them where the winch may get submerged?
Is there a winch out there that would peform better and last longer underwater?

Well, I used mine submerged to pull out a Jeep (I, on the other hand was stuck for a couple days, long story). It worked just fine. Once I recovered my truck, I pulled it apart to dry/clean/grease it and it still works well today (this was a couple years ago).

Most all the new winchs have water/weather proof relays so its not a huge deal but you do need to make sure that your greases/oils are ok.

note to self, check winch

I've never used my winch under water, heck never even though about having to, not that it hasnt been thru a little water

My warn is having some issues, I cant turn it to free spool, guess I have to see if I can get it covered by warranty. Anyone have any experience with warn warranty? Will really suck having to take it off and ship it.

When you say you can't turn it to free spool...do you mean the lever won't move, or, after you shift it, its still engaged/not free spooling?

The lever's are reversible, and, its possible its just loose enough inside to jam. etc.

You can probably just take it apart/reassemble it, and be OK. Unless you have a baked fish in it or something...then you also have to remove the fish, etc.
