I want to buy this b/c I do alot of kayaking but I don't see how you would secure the kayak since there are no side rails?? Any ideas?

I agree it looks like a nice gust of wind would bend those little bars with a small craft on the roof

well a kayak doesn't weigh much but it concerns me how is it strapped down?? They have a safari rack attachment that goes in the center. but it's 800 instead of 375.

any other options? because this is what I found BEFORE I purchased my JK. And being able to haul a kayak was a must for me...

if you put the soft top down you can just strap the kayaks down running the straps around the kayak and roll bars, ratchet strap and they wont move

I thought about that, for local use would work. what do you hook onto? For a 2 or 3 hour trip in case of rain I have to come up with something...

just wrap the straps up over the kayak and around the roll bars and hook end of straps to each other, it wont budge. could probably do it with soft top up but never tried.

If the rack is secure, just strap the kayak to the rack's cross bars. It's just like any other Yakima or Thule application. I see no issues.

That rack (with the basket) is definitely not flimsy. I'm a svelte 280 lbs and I walk around on top of mine while strapping down gear. You will not have any problem carrying a couple of 50 lb kayaks, even w/o the basket. Just strap them down with some rope. To avoid scratches, get a couple of those pool noodles for padding on the bars.

Thanks Joe, how do you think you strap down the kayaks w/o the cross bars?

I wouldn't buy the rack without the basket but if you really don't want it, this will work:
