Default Clunking sound from front of Jeep around axle area

Update: later in the day
So you guys will love this. I pick up the Jeep without any fixes and of course nothing clunks anymore. I'm going to check on Eddie's suggestion about looking at the Ujoints.

Update April 1, 2009
So the dealership (Irvine Tuttle Click Jeep), just called me back and told me that I have a bad CV joint on the front driveshaft and that the warranty won't cover it since I put 35 inch tires on it and a 4" lift. Per their service tech I will need a new driveshaft for $550 plus install. Of course I'm not going to use them and will buy a good aftermarket 1350 instead. I'll be asking them if my warranty covers anything after the mods that I have done.

I'll be pulling off the front driveshaft for now until the new JReel one comes in.

Greg

So my Jeep started having some violent cluncking sounds coming from under the engine. It sounds like the gears in the diff are binding up on something.

Could be some mud and water in the diff case from this weekend. My overpressure hose from the diff did fall off at the begining of the trip.

I'm going to tear off the diff case shortly and see if there is a bunch of goo in there.

At first I thought that the drive shaft boot was torn, but it looks fine and it wouldn't be turning anyway since I was in 2 wheel drive at the time I heard the clunking.

Anybody else experience this?

Made the clunking sound while going in a straight line and while turning.

Went to the auto parts store to get some fluid for the diff case and the parts guy told me that I should be under warranty. I just called Chrysler and road side assistance is going to come over and take the vehicle into the dealership. The dealership said the issue should be under warranty.

I'm curious to see if the dealership tries to play a fast one with me. The service guys first question was if I take it off road. "Of course I take it offroad, it's a Jeep" I answered.

I'll post what the dealership has to say tomorrow.

I'm going to smack the service guy if he says anything about my 35" tires being the culprit.

I has a clunking sound in the front axle. founf out that the camber bolts that were supplied in my bds lift kit were not holding the axle in place. Not due to bds, but the design of the adj. tabs on the mounting brackets. turns out my axle was shifting all around!!! so i ordered dana 30 lower control arm mounts from rock krawler and now all is GREAT.

I will be interested to hear what the dealership finds.

I had a clunking noise and I was convinced it was in the axle. Long story short, it turned out to be the top bushing on the shock mount. It was just gone after some wheeling. The top washer and nut were still there, so it must have cracked and separated to fall out. I replaced the bushing and no further issues. The bushing cost like $1.09 or something.

Based on my previous research, I would have also recommended checking the C-Clips on the front outer shafts. There are several threads about these.

hey greg, definitely check out the u-joints on your front axles. sounds to me like you've got one on its way out if not already toast.

as far as cam bolts goes, this is why you should never use them.
