Default How long would a 10gal air tank last?

If I were to mount just an air tank to the Jeep (permanent or temporary) and then filled it to capacity, could I air a set of 40" tires up from 16-20 psi up to 38 psi from just that one tank (one fill)? What factors do I need to consider? Like tank psi, etc?

My dilema is that on the last trail run amongst the 6 of us that went, we only had 4 compressors. After the owner of each did their own tires plus a little of mine and someone elses, they all crapped out because of the extreme heat from running so long. I had to drive about 10 miles at 24 psi in order to get to a gas station back on the road. Driving that short distance didn't seem to be that bad but I don't want to be stuck like that again, especially on a farther out trail. I know the long term solution with tires this size is to get a complete onboard air system like from ARB or ViAir but those run $400+ whereas I can find just a 5-10 gal tank for $25-$40 and then fill it from home before I left.

It would also be nice if the air tank held enough to do mine plus top anyone else's off who needed it.

Thoughts?

Those air tanks are not going to fill your 40's...you need a C02 tank....you can fill it up for $20 and then fill your 40's and still run air tools and then fill your tires up 3 more times....they are sweet...prob cheaper than on-board air too. Unless you buy a Power tank, they are spendy... but with a sweet rig like yours....money aint nothin, you must be rich!

Wow, thanks man!

The chart shows, depending on tank size, anywhere from 1-2 min to fill a 40" tire from 10-20 psi. I would have to go with at least a PT10 tank just to fill my 4 then have some left over for the group. Here's the chart from their site...

Think long term.."ViAir but those run $400+ whereas I can find just a 5-10 gal tank for $25-$40 and then fill it from home before I left"

to fill take 10 times= $400
If ya want to help your buddies too...i think your more willing to give free air with a viair the use all the air in a tank knowing that ya have to fill it evey time..

I dont know... I am in the same boat trying to see want I want to do as well... I have a viair and small tank now.. I would like to install it under the trunk when i remove the big muffler.. I plan on wheeling with you guys soon!!! I put my lift on next week.. You could use mine to see how it will work .....

Just my 2cents....

Thanks Chad, I think you are right. Considering that even with the larger Powertank I still only get 7-10 tires out of it and definitely less when I let my fellow Jeepers use it. And with at least $20-$30 per CO2 fill up it can get quite costly. The initial investment on the ViAir set-up compared to the Powertank is about the same so long term the ViAir comes out on top in regards to cost. The trade-off is time since the Powertank clearly wins hands down. But then again I would have to wait for everyone else to air up their tires at the same time so being the first done doesn't necessarilty have all the advantage.

Powertank and a back up ARB Kit or Viair are the ways to go

Run air tools, re-seat tires, air up tires, blowing dirt off your hair....

Powertank will air up your tires in no time. It is one of the must have trail equipment for me in the pass 8 years or so.

regualr 10 gal air is not going to fill one 40" tire. You can only fill your air tank to 115lbs The tank and the tire will balance out and equalize.

I have posted before my home made co2 wich i did for under 200.00 and it is a 20# tank. This tank would probably fill 20 40" tires from 6psi to 45psi and still be able to run air tools. I also have rigged up a two way splitter that enables me to fill two tires at once and both under 3 min. Not the option for everyone the tank is heavy and a bit awkward.

I think if I ha to make a choice in the $500 range i would rather do an onboard air system, but like i said i got my system for under 200. Oh yeah and i found fill ups for about $11-18.00 not bad for 20lbs. (industrial gas supply place in LB)

Man, that was slick!

I would need to mount the pressure gauge somewhere on the outside or at least where I didn't have to open the tailgate to view it but either way, that River Raider evap and tank skid is sweet. It definitely solves the dilema of where to mount the tank (safe and securely).

Here's the pics of the skid for those who care....
