painting stock wheels
HAS ANYONE PAINTED STOCK ALUMINUM WHEELS AND WISH THEY DIDN'T I'M REALLY ON THE FENCE IF IM GOING TO TRY IT OR NOT THEY ARE THE ONLY WHEELS I HAVE SO IF I MESS THEM UP IM $CREWED. I DONT REALLY WANT OR HAVE ANY CASH FOR POWDER COATING
I did it. It cost me about $25 in supplies and about 7 hours of my time. I think it looks great. If it scratches or chips, you touch it up with a little more paint. Also, if you decide to powdercoat, you still can and they just take a little more prep time.
There are plenty of good powder coat places near Detroit. I remember getting a card somebody in Pontiac at the Woodward Cruise. They had a ton of samples and seemed like good guys. I believe their name was Cutters or something of the sort. You should be able to get 5 wheels done for under $300 and you can walk away with a way unique look that's way more durable than any paint job.
Also, powder coating isn't limited to the candy coatings seen on so many hot rod parts but available in matte and crinkle finishes. I send stuff out all the time when I buy stuff that has inadequate protection from the elements. The winter road salt here and I'm sure there not only eats up steel parts but can make aluminum look pretty nasty as well.
