Default Teraflex says 5.38, Forum says 5.13s?

Sorry guys, I know there are a hundreds of threads on this topic already and after reading all of them about gears and what I should go with I had decided to go ahead with the 5.13's and I think most people on here would agree. But wanted to get opinions of some of you forum members for my specific needs before I take it into Teraflex to get my jeep regeard tomorrow. I have an Auto JK Rubi 4 door unlimited with 35's and dont ever plan on going with bigger tires. From all the research and threads i've read on this site already I had my mind set on 5.13s. I called teraflex to schedule an appointment and told them I wanted to regear to 5.13's. They asked me what I was driving, how big my tires were and how much highway driving I do and said im on the highway 50-60% of the time and after putting me on hold for a moment to check when they can fit me in the rep came back and said they can fit me in Thursday but I should go with 5.38's instead because it would give me more power so now i'm more confused then ever. He said whichever gears I choose its going to cost me the same but they would recommend 5.38's. Im sure the 5.38s will give me more power but I thought 5.13's would be enough without reducing gas mileage even more. Can anyone help set me straight on this once and for all before I take my jeep in tomorrow.

I have 5:13's with 37's and get about 15.38 mpg. If I was to do it over, then 5:38's.

5.13's for 37" tires and 5.38's for 40" or 42" tires....if your set in staying with 35's then there is no reason for 5.38's! I would install 4.88's with my 35's for mpg but im poor!

5.13's will be just fine especially with your highway driving. 5.13's will be more fuel efficent than the 5.38's . If you were going to be towing, crossing mountain ranges or heavy duty off roading maybe the 5.38's but I have 5.13's with 35's and feel I have plenty of power....well maybe not plenty but as much as a 6cyl can give to a vehicle shaped like a brick.

I think opinions vary. I'm going with 33s and IF I EVER regear, it'll be 5.13s. I simply don't drive that fast and the extra kick from the gears will be great. seer1 has or has run 5.13s with 33s. I think that is comparable to 5.38s and 35s. Maybe he'll chime in. If you don't do tons of highway driving, you might think about 5.38s. I would do it if I were gonna go with 35s. Then, I've never been one to follow the crowd anyway.

Thanks guys, I figured I'd just stick with the 5.13's after alot of research on this. If there was a possibility of going with bigger tires in the future I'd definately go with the 5.38's now. I do pull a 3200 lb camping trailer with my jeep about once a month and I can definatley feel the need for more power up some of the hills so maybe 5.38s would be a better choice for that but like I said I only pull that once a month and its only going to be the 4 hour drive to Moab and back. Anyway I started getting confused after making my appointment and needed some more outside help so I feel better about my decision and not regret it in the future. It doesn't help that I'm undecisive as hell either. I love this forum but hate how it makes me want to spend all my money on my jeep. My name is Mike and I'm a jeepaholic.

I agree...I am running 33s as well and would like the added ummppphhhh from the 5.13s...Heck I may even go for the 5.38s cause I know I will eventually move up to 35s

I had teraflex put 5.13's in mine and I run 35's. I wish I would have gone 5.38, with all the mountains and hills I have a hard time keeping speed on the east side of I-215.

No real mountains but lots of big hills here in Georgia. The 5.13s with the automatic work really nice.

SLCJK: you have no plans for larger than 35" tires........now......

I'm very guilty as charged for moving from 33's to 35's, and now I have 37's on the plate.

By the way- my 4.88's was going to be "more than enough" also

Hello 5.38's
