Default Looking for a nice place to do some wheeling and possibly camping -- any suggestions?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for someplace to drive out to and do some wheeling (and possibly camping) with my girlfriend before she heads to Germany for 2 years.

Some things I am considering (as far as scenery goes...I dont know any specific locations yet) are:

- Mountainous areas (there have been some threads I've looked at on these forums that had some good pictures of snow in June. Looked great).

- A river to drive along (with like streams and stuff that doesnt go too high on the jeep, kinda like 3-10 inches deep for a long distance so that it can be driven in and just hear the water splashing, etc).

- Maybe sand dunes (I know that there are some in Syracuse, KS <www. syracusesanddunes .com/> But I've heard that jumping dunes can be horrible for your axels and joints..... Also don't have a portable air compressor yet).

- Moab, Utah is also a possibility, although it's a bit of a drive.

We live in Manhattan, KS (north east/central KS) so closer is better.

Looking for any suggestions and input!

Also, just to give you an idea of my capabilities, I have a completely stock X (3.21 gears and all ), but might have some rubi take offs by the time we do this trip.

Thanks!

I'd start by at least narrowing it down to a particular state. About half the country has some amazing mountains. Once you get it narrowed down to how far you want to go, you might want to re-post in the area specific threads to get some more ideas.

I'm thinking the four corners might be a good choice. You can go from Durango to Telluride to Moab in not that much time and see some beautiful country along the way.

You could see some great stuff out here in the Sierras as well, but you will spend a lot more time on the road getting out here.

Have fun! It's been too long since I've taken a long camping trip like that...I'm jealous!

Check out Disney, OK (about 290 miles from Manhattan in NE corner of the state) and see if that might be of interest to you. Not really a long road you can run, but some river running, hilly trails and rocks. JK-Forum members go there several times a year, so keep an eye on the Midwest Forum for specifics.

You can camp at many sites around Grand Lake 'O the Cherokees, though Hogan's is especially four-wheeler friendly (but may not be up to the standards you'd like--it's more like a trailer park than a KOA campground). If JackMac4 goes and offers stays at his family's place, that's a great deal!

Here's a few pic's from Disney:

Try the Badlands in Attica Indiana! It would not be that much of a drive, they have a wide variety of trails and plenty of dunes. there is an awesome campground very close. Its called Summers campground. Go online and check the Badlands out. its something like 750 acres

Disney, OK looks great!

I'm going to go ahead and repost this in the four corners and midwest sub forums as per the suggestion.

I also found a place called ouray, CO that looks pretty cool, but the pieces of trail I've seen look kinda mild -- like something a minivan or 4runner could do.
